Scott Briggs is ready to take his place in the Lyon County Commission room in January. He’s been attending meetings since September to get a feel for it.
Briggs, who was elected in the First District during November’s general election, will take his position as commissioner upon Myron VanGundy’s retirement.
Briggs said he decided to run when he heard VanGundy wasn’t going to seek re-election.
“I thought the people needed a rural representation,” he said.
Briggs farms, ranches and lives northwest of Reading. He said he is looking forward to joining the commission.
Since he’s been coming to the commission meetings, Briggs said he has gained a different perspective on county government.
“I understand why things happen,” he said. “It’s been educational.”
Having run his own business, Briggs said he brings several qualifications to the position, including knowledge of the budgeting process.
“I think I’m fairly frugal when it comes to money,” he said. “One of my objectives is to see where the county government can manage money better.”
Briggs also said he brings another quality to the table.
“I do have a little bit of a sense of humor,” he said, with a smile. “I hope they can appreciate that.”
Briggs is married to Jann Briggs and has two sons. One son lives in Western Kansas and works with a cattle company and the other is a Lyon County Sheriff’s deputy. Briggs said he enjoys hunting and watching high school and college sports.
