At national meeting
Several K-State students were selected to serve as national officers or committee chairs at the 2006 annual meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, Nov. 10-15, in Indianapolis, Ind. Local students who attended the meeting were: Paul Hartley, junior in agronomy from Emporia, who will serve as 2007 Soil Judging Committee chair and Leah Ferdinand, junior in agronomy from Reading.
Help hurricane recovery
Lexie Hayes, senior at Kansas State University from Eureka in animal sciences and industry, was one of four members of Kansas State University’s chapter of Alpha Zeta, a professional honor society for students in agriculture, who went to Louisiana Dec. 17-22 to help farmers, ranchers and rural communities still reeling from hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The students went to Vermilion Parish in south central Louisiana for the five-day volunteer project. They mended fences, rebuilt barns and cleared brush and debris.
Baker graduate
Associate of arts in business graduate Bruce Holt of Emporia was among more than 700 undergraduate, graduate and nursing students at Baker University to receive their degrees during commencement ceremonies Dec. 17 at the Collins Center in Baldwin.
Phi Kappa Phi
Kansas State University’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a national academic honor society, has gained nearly 200 new members.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. To be eligible for election, juniors must have completed at least 72 credit hours and rank in the top 7.5 percent of their class. Seniors and graduate students must rank in the top 10 percent of their class.
K-State’s new Phi Kappa Phi members include: Erin Bachman, junior in public relations; Dustin Hamman, junior in mechanical engineering; and Justin Mallon, senior in construction science and management all of Emporia.
Washburn grads
Fall commencement ceremonies at Washburn University was Dec. 15 in Lee Arena, Petro Allied Health Center. The local graduates included Jessica Stegman of Emporia, who received a bachelor of science in nursing, and Bryon Rosine of Lebo, who graduated Summa Cum Laude as a School of Business Scholar with a bachelor of business administration.
