Surprise! county moves extension office

Friday, December 22, 2006

Where to put the Lyon County Extension office — a matter of contention for several years — was resolved unexpectedly at Thursday’s meeting of the Lyon County Commission.

Lyon County commissioners voted 2-1 to move the office into the former Deer Trail building at 2632 W. Highway 50.

Chairman Marshall Miller opposed the motion to allow extension to move into the building following remodeling. The building now is being used as a bus barn for L-Cat buses.

Commissioner Bob Davis brought the item before the board Thursday. He said he wanted to move ahead and get some contractors to look at the building.

Miller said there is space for extension offices in the 402 Annex, the former Lyon County Courthouse, but Davis said that wasn’t the right environment for the organization.

“I contend that 4-H students and kids should not be subjected to that environment,” Davis said. Davis added that security might be needed for the annex building and people associated with extension should not be subjected to that.

Miller disagreed with the vote, saying that it was coming too soon.

“I think we’re getting a little fast on it there,” Miller said. “To say that’s the location is a little premature. That’s why I’m voting no. I think it’ll work fine, but I’m not sure what other headaches we’ll see out there.”

Commissioners approved the amended 2006 budget, which republishes 10 funds. Bob Agler, of A&M Consultants, said no additional tax money is being levied.

“As good as we can tell, it leaves all the cash carryovers pretty much intact,” Agler said.

The 2007 budget is being partially funded by cash carryovers, said Dan Slater, county controller.

“We look in good share as far as cash carryover goes,” Slater said.

Agler said that the original 2006 budget was adopted in Aug. 2005.

“This is a pretty short list,” he said. “And really it has no impact on cash flow.”

Other items on Thursday’s agenda:

F Commissioners approved the purchase of nine used pick-up trucks and one used tandem axle dump truck for the Highway Department.

F Commissioners approved the purchase of a 1991 Smith compressor from state surplus and dispose of old compressor on E-Bay.

F Commissioners authorized the purchase of two fiber-optic scopes for use by Kansas Highway Patrol and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Evidently the Chamber wants something else in the Deere Bldg. When will Marshall Miller and his Chamber buddies learn?
