Christmas closings
Monday is Christmas, and a number of closings are planned, including Emporia’s financial institutions and federal, state, county and city government offices. The district court will also be closed.
There will be no trash collection. Monday’s residential trash will be collected Wednesday. Commercial, roll-off and cardboard accounts usually picked up on Monday will be picked up on Tuesday. The transfer station and recycling center will be closed.
The Gazette will not be published.
Other closings include:
• The Emporia Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday.
• The Lyon County Historical Museum will be closed.
• Emporia State University will be closed.
• The Emporia public schools will be on winter break until January.
• The Lyon County Health Department and Flint Hills Community Health Center will be closed Saturday through Monday and reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Nears century mark
Former Emporian Virgil H. Bell of Prescott, Ariz., will observe his 100th birthday on Jan. 7. He and his wife, Eula, lived in Emporia for 60 years before moving to Arizona in 1994. Eula Bell died in 1997.
Family and friends have planned a celebration in Prescott on his birthday.
