The No. 1-ranked Class 1A Olpe Lady Eagles maintained their undefeated record on Tuesday night by claiming a 67-14 victory against the Hartford Jaguars. The win was one that ended in a 53-point lead for the Lady Eagles.
“Really good things happened tonight,” Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said. “We’ve been working on some areas, and tonight I thought we really showed improvement on some of those areas.”
Kayla Krueger and Megan Woods each scored 15 points in the game for the Lady Eagles. However, Nelson said less-noticed players like underclassman Sammy Maley played well.
“We had a lot of kids play,” Nelson said. “A lot of kids came off the bench and played well.”
The Lady Eagles got their lead in the first quarter by outscoring Hartford 21-0. In fact, it wasn’t until the second quarter that Hartford made its way onto the scoreboard.
Hartford never recovered from Olpe’s initial scoring outburst.
Lyndon girls 45, Lebo 42
The Lyndon girls rallied from a 35-34 third-quarter deficit with an 11-7 fourth-quarter scoring output as the Lady Tigers edged the Lebo Lady Wolves, 45-42, Tuesday night in Lyndon.
Despite going just 5-of-9 from the free-throw line in the final period, it was enough for Lyndon, as it managed to hold Lebo to just three field goals and a free throw in the fourth quarter in turning a one-point hole into a three-point victory.
Krista Banzhaf led the way for Lyndon, scoring 9 of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter. The 9 points wasn’t enough to dig the Lady Tigers out of their halftime hole, though, as Nickole Presley scored 6 points in the third, and both teams played to a deadlock in the period at 14-14.
But thanks to a 4-of-6 shooting effort from the charity stripe by Stephanie Goetz in the fourth — Goetz finished with 10 points — plus field goals by Banzhaf, Ashley Persinger and Kayla Schmidt, Lyndon was able to pull out the win.
Megan Laflin led Lebo with 14 points while Presley added 13.
Osage City girls 41, Wellsville 27
Osage City jumped out to a 13-2 first quarter lead and never looked back Tuesday night, as the Lady Indians rolled to a 41-27 victory over Wellsville in Osage City.
By halftime, Osage City had a 25-9 lead, and after holding Wellsville to just 2 points again in the third quarter, the Lady Indians enjoyed a 34-11 lead.
Kady Paul led the Lady Indians with 11 points, as she hit three 3-pointers and went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Chelsea Reed and Miranda Bryan added 8 points apiece in the victory.
Wabaunsee girls 55, Northern Heights 48
Northern Heights couldn’t overcome a slow start in a seven-point loss to Wabaunsee.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind 29-14 at half before outscoring Wabaunsee in the third and fourth quarters.
“I need to do a better job of getting my team focused and ready to play,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “The first half, we didn’t play with a lot of energy. The second half, we were more aggressive, but we need to put together four quarters of basketball.”
Heights never could contain Lindsay Deiter, as the senior scored 27 of Wabaunsee’s 55 points.
Sarah Boline led the Wildcats with 11 points, while Alex DeLong added 9.
Wabaunsee won despite making just 11 of its 48 field-goal attempts (23 percent). The Chargers made up for it at the free-throw line, where they made 26 of 31 shots (84 percent).
