Madison uses big 2nd-half run to spark victory

Wednesday, December 20, 2006

Madison dominated the second half in a 59-39 victory over Burlingame.

The Bulldogs led by just one at the half and looked to be on the ropes early in the second half, as All-State forward Jordan Stout picked up his fourth foul with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

But with the senior on the bench, Madison went on a 9-0 run to take control.

“We had them right where we wanted them,” Burlingame coach Creighton Winters said, “and they put it to us after that.”

Madison outscored Burlingame 35-16 in the second half.

“We had matchups the way we wanted and couldn’t hit a layup,” Winters said. “That’s what it seemed like.”

Kaleb Schankie led Madison with 20 points, while Stout added 16.

Zach Dodson paced Burlingame with 13 points, with Colton Hoffman contributing 10.

Northern Hts boys 65, Wabaunsee 33

The Wildcats bounced back from an emotional loss to Council Grove with a convincing 32-point victory over Wabaunsee.

Heights’ defense allowed just two points in the second quarter, helping the Wildcats to a 35-11 advantage at the half.

Rick Hobson led Heights with 16 points, while Cody Neidfeldt added 15. Haydon Parks chipped in eight, while Michael Glass, Levi Hizar and Jake Weakley all contributed 3-pointers.

The blowout allowed some of Heights’ junior varsity players to get action in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats still outscored the Chargers, 20-9, in the frame.

Heights improved its record to 4-1 entering the holiday break.

Lebo boys 43,

Lyndon 27

Another victory for the Lebo Wolves came during Tuesday night’s game against the Lyndon Tigers. Lebo jumped out to a five-point lead in the first half, the Wolves never trailed after that.

“I thought we played really well defensively,” Lyndon coach Michael Massey said. “ We guarded them really well.”

Unfortunately, Lyndon’s defense was not enough to pull the Tigers through for a victory. The Tigers’ chances were not helped when Quinton Testerman, one of their leading scorers, fouled out. Leading Lebo in scoring was Cameron Smith, who scored 11 points.

Olpe boys 62,

Hartford 33

Tuesday night’s game marked yet another victory for the Olpe Eagles, who have maintained an undefeated 8-0 record so far this season. The Eagles held a nine-point lead over the Hartford Jaguars at the end of the first half, and they never let up.

“We had our spurts,” Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said. “At the beginning of the game we had quite a bit of energy, but the last four minutes of the first half they got us down to a nine-point lead.”

Helping the Eagles to victory was Seth Pargman, who scored 21 points in the game. However, he didn’t do it alone, as point guard Colton Stueve was a key player in getting the ball to Pargman so that he could finish the job at the net, Schmidt said.

Burlington boys 79,

Neodesha 23

Burlington rolled to a dominating 79-23 victory Tuesday night over Neodesha. Burlington led by 25 at the end of the first half and never allowed Neodesha to regain its composure.

Burlington senior Tyrel Reed led the way with 22 points, but junior Luke Barnwell was not far behind. Barnwell scored 19 points.

“I just thought it was a good way to start Christmas break,” Burlington coach Stacy Reed said. “We have a lot we need to work on, but our defense and rebounding really stepped up this game.”

Wellsville boys 47,

Osage City 40

Wellsville’s Colin Wright scored 10 points in each half to help lift his team to a 47-40 victory over Osage City on Tuesday night in Wellsville.

Wright hit eight shots from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line on his way to a game-high 20 points, as Wellsville led 23-12 at halftime en route to the seven-point win.

Osage City, meanwhile, did not have a player score in double figures. Evan Faulkner and Andrew. Ginzel did, however, each score 9 points, with Ginzel knocking down three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that allowed Osage City to pull back into the game, but it was not enough.
