The battle of two goliaths lived up to its billing, as Erin Cyplik's jump shot with .7 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Grand Valley State to a 73-71 overtime victory over the Lady Hornets in the Northern Kentucky Classic in Highland Heights, Ky.
GVSU, the defending National Champion, started the game on a 9-0 run before ESU responded to take a 24-18 lead.
The two teams went back and forth with the advantage in the final five minutes. Following an Erika Ryskamp two that gave GVSU a 65-63 lead with 28 seconds remaining, Casey Henningsen responded with a layup off a rebound to tie it at 65 with 11 seconds left in regulation.
The Lakers' Crystal Zick missed a shot at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Michelle Stueve's three-point play gave ESU a 70-66 with 2:40 left. Ryskamp hit a free throw to tie it at 71 with 50 seconds remaining, and Carolyn Dorsey turned it over on the next possession to give GVSU the last possession. Ryskamp's shot missed, but Cyplik grabbed the carom and hit an 8-foot shot from the baseline to give the Lakers the two-point advantage.
ESU's inbounds pass was stolen, sealing the GVSU victory.
Henningsen had 18 points in the loss. Cassondra Boston added 16, while Genae Glaper had 11 in her first game back after being declared academically eligible this semester.
All-American Michelle Stueve had just seven points, finishing 2 of 11 from the field.
Julia Braseth scored 24 points for GVSU, which included 17 in the second half.
ESU falls to 7-2 with the loss.
