Hayden Parks of Northern Heights looks to pass around to Council Grove players Friday night.

Clint Roddy’s hit a running, one-handed, 12-foot shot at the buzzer to give Council Grove the last-second 72-71 victory over Northern Heights.

“Council Grove just hit a really good shot,” Northern Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “We had it really well challenged. They just hit a shot they had to make.”

Roddy’s two came despite being well-guarded on the play, as he shot the ball over Heights’ 6-foot-5 center Haydon Parks, who nearly got a finger on it.

Heights rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a 71-70 lead with 30 seconds remaining. The Wildcats had a chance to extend their lead in the final 10 seconds, but a pair of free throws were missed, giving the Braves one last chance.

“I still,” Massey said, “couldn’t be prouder of our kids.”

Matt Ross led Council Grove with 22 points, while Roddy added 18. The Braves won despite having three players foul out.

Rick Hobson took over the second half for Heights, scoring 23 of his 28 points in the final 16 minutes. Jake Weakley had 14 points — which included four 3-pointers — and J.W. Roeder contributed 10.

Burlington boys 76, Humboldt 62

Tyrel Reed went off for 44 points in helping the third-ranked Class 3A Burlington boys defeat Humboldt 76-62 on Friday night in Burlington.

Reed hit 14 shots from the field — including three 3-pointers — and went a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line in the Wildcats’ victory.

Burlington led at halftime just 34-31, and Humboldt managed to keep the game close well into the second half before the Wildcats outscored Humboldt 21-13 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Nick Garrett chipped in 20 points for Burlington, while Humboldt had three players in double figures. Burlington moved to 7-0 with the victory.

Madison boys 51,

Hartford 43

Madison used defense to scrap its way to a 51-43 victory over Hartford on Friday night in Madison. The Bulldogs held the Jaguars to single-digit scoring in two of four quarters in securing the victory to move to 6-1 on the season.

“I thought we played great defense,” Madison coach Mike Pitko said. “Hartford scrapped hard and fought hard, and it was a tough game right up until the end.”

Madison took a 30-25 lead into halftime and gave itself some breathing room in the third quarter by outscoring the Jaguars 10-6 in the period, and Hartford came up short despite outscoring the Bulldogs 16-12 in the second and 12-11 in the fourth.

Jordan Stout led the way offensively for Madison with 20 points. Pitko, however, was pleased with his team’s offensive balance, singling out Danny James in particular, who came off the bench to score 8 points.

“We had some nice, balanced scoring, which takes the load off some of our scorers,” Pitko said. “I thought Danny James came off the bench and played his best game of the year for us. Jordan had a nice game, but we’ve got a lot of people that can score for us.”

With one game left before his team gets some days off for Christmas — a Tuesday game against Burlingame — Pitko was excited about the possibility of entered the break with just one loss.

“Going into the break with a 7-1 record would be a nice boost for us,” he said.

Blake Edwards led Hartford with 13 points and Mickey Matthews added 10.

Lebo boys 48,

Flinthills 34

Taylor Barker led three Lebo players in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting to help the Wolves defeat Flinthills 48-34 in Rosalia on Friday night. Cameron Smith had 12 points and Aaron Gillespie added 10 for Lebo, which outscored Flinthills in every quarter but the third on its way to the 14-point victory.

On the other side, Grant Vogt was the only Mustang in double figures with 10 points, as Flinthills shot just 11-of-48 from the field — including just 4-of-20 from three-point range.

“Lebo played well,” Flinthills coach Don Wedel said. “We did not adjust and could not shoot the ball. We just did not play well. We were out-hustled.”

Lebo jumped out to a 13-5 lead after the first quarter and extended that advantage to 15 points with a 10-7 second period that made it 23-12 at halftime. Though Flinthills outscored Lebo 14-12 in the third, Lebo stretched its lead with a 13-8 fourth quarter that put the game away.

Burlingame boys 59,

MdCV 47

Burlingame used a strong first quarter to pull away from MdCV in the 12-point triumph.

Taking advantage of a zone defense that dared them to shoot long-range shots, the Bearcats made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and seven overall in the first half.

Despite the quick start, Burlingame still saw its lead dip to six points on two different occasions.

“We seemed to keep letting them get back into the game,” Burlingame coach Creighton Winters said.

The Bearcats made 14-of-16 free throws to seal the victory.

Hank Zerbe led all scorers with 19 points for Burlingame, while Chris Patterson had 17.

MdCV was paced by Chisom Spencer and David Becker, who had 15 points each. Dennis Becker contributed 11 in the loss.

Olpe boys 57,

Chase County 27

Olpe’s pressure defense caused havoc in its 57-27 victory over Chase County.

“Their man-to-man defense really bothered us,” Chase County coach Landon Hinkson said. “We were pretty timid on the offensive end.”

The Bulldogs scored just three points in the second quarter on their way to an 11-point first half.

“We didn’t attack the basket and we couldn’t hit anything,” Hinkson said. “We were ice cold.”

Seth Pargman’s 16 points paced the Eagles, while Jordan Pargman came in right behind with 11. Tanner Coble also hit double figures with 10.

Chase County was led by Trevor Johnson’s 8 points.

“We’ve got to improve on the offensive end,” Hinkson said, “if we’re ever going to win some ballgames.”

Lyndon boys 30,

Waverly 28

Lyndon rallied from seven points down in the fourth quarter to take the come-from-behind victory over Waverly.

The Tigers utilized a full-court press in the final seconds of the third quarter and decided to keep the defense implemented for the fourth.

The results were kind. Waverly scored just one point in the fourth quarter in a 10-1 Lyndon run.

“Guys finally decided to wake up and play,” Lyndon coach Mike Massey said. “Guys looked like they were sleepwalking through the first three quarters.”

Lyndon was led by Quinton Testerman, who had 10 points. Alex Wendling added eight.

Heath Redding hit double figures for Waverly with 10, while Dentin Chapman and Matt Coursen had 8 apiece.
