Solis files for seat

The Emporia city commission race gained its sixth candidate this morning, when Emporia businessman Jesse Solis filed for election.

This is Solis’s third try for the commission after defeats in 2003 and 2005. Solis, 66, is the owner of Solis & Solis Security and the co-owner of Elbert Liquor Store.

"I think it's a privilege to be able to run," Solis said Friday afternoon. "There are a lot of services that are provided by our city and we shouldn't take anything for granted. What I decided to do is throw my hat in the ring again, see what happens and see if the citizens of Emporia want some new ideas on the commission."

Candidates have until January 23 at noon to file for the 2007 race. If more than six candidates file, a primary election will be held on Feb. 27 to narrow the field. The general election will be held April 3.

Candidates began lining up for the city election in February. So far, the ballot also contains lawn-care business owner Percy Wayman, retiree Phil Dillon, car-dealer Jeff Longbine and incumbent commissioners Tom Myers and Bob Agler.

The top two finishers in the general election will get four-year terms on the commission. The third-place finisher gets a two-year term.
