Krueger’s 23 points lead Olpe Girls to victory

Wednesday, December 13, 2006

The showdown between the No. 1 and No. 4 teams in the Wichita Eagle rankings was only that for a half, as No. 1 Olpe pulled away from Flinthills in a 69-50 victory.

The Lady Eagles led just 24-19 at the break before exploding for 29 points in the third quarter to take a commanding 53-31 advantage.

“I felt very good going into half only down five,” Flinthills coach Mark Womacks said. “We did not shoot the ball well. Our offense was very stationary.”

The Lady Mustangs were a bit short-handed in the game. Taylor Stands sat out because of injury, and Caley Onek played despite being sick all day with the flu.

“No excuses,” Womacks said. “We should have competed better. I would like to think that we are a better basketball team than we showed tonight.”

Kayla Krueger led Olpe with 23 points. Megan Woods added 17, while Sammy Maley contributed 7.

Flinthills was paced by Alexa Cuskelly, who had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds. Onek contributed 12 points in the loss.

Waverly girls 50,

Madison 37

Waverly used a third-quarter run to pull away from Madison in a 13-point victory.

The Waverly girls outscored Madison 23-13 in the third period, turning a 19-15 halftime lead to a 42-28 advantage.

Whitney Good led Waverly, scoring 13 points. Brenna Wilson added 12, while Megan Steward hit double figures with 10.

Shelby Buster paced Madison with a double-double, scoring 13 points and adding 13 rebounds. Morgan Stout also had 13 points in the loss.

The two players suffered from a cold shooting night, combining to make 6 of their 28 shots from the floor.

Madison fell to 2-4 on the season.

Hartford girls 58,

MdCV 24

After last week’s loss, the Lady Jaguars came back and reclaimed a win by defeating the Marais des Cygnes Valley Trojans. Leading by 17 points at the end of the first half, the Lady Jaguars never lost their lead.

“We shot the ball really well from the outside,” Hartford coach Lance Bolen said, “but we really need to work on our free throws, conditioning, and rebounds.”

The Lady Jaguars’ Jessica Wilson stood out in Tuesday’s game, scoring 12 points.

“She shot the ball really well from the outside,” Bolen said. “She came off the bench and really provided a spark for the team.”

For MdCV, Rachel Clark was the leading scorer with a total of nine points.

Southern Coffey County girls 47, Oswego 15

Defense was the story for Southern Coffey County in its blowout victory over Oswego.

The Lady Titans allowed just three points in the first half on their way to a 22-3 advantage. The SCC defense also allowed the team to get through its own tough stretch offensively, as the first quarter ended with the Lady Titans clinging to a 4-2 lead.

“We started out shooting the ball terrible,” SCC coach Jeff True said. “We had good looks at the basket, but the shots just weren’t falling.”

Laurie Ohl led a balanced SCC scoring attack with 9 points. LaNesha Harvey and Shelby Birk both added 8, while Hannah Brooks contributed 7.

Ashley Barnes had nine of Oswego’s 15 points in the game.

The Lady Titans (4-1) will have 21-day layoff before playing the Flinthills Lady Mustangs on Jan. 2.

“I’m pleased with where the girls are at physically,” True said, “but we have a lot of room for improvement.”

F Erica Bennett and Jesse Newell contributed to this report.
