Burlington boys break loose after halftime, defeat Chanute, 76-59

After leading at the half by just 7 points over Chanute, the Burlington Wildcats finished the game with a 17-point victory, 76-59. Leading the Wildcats were Tyrel Reed with 24 points, Corey Smith with 17 points and Luke Barnwell with 17 points.

“We have some young kids that are really starting to develop,” coach Stacy Reed said, “Young players are getting to develop with the older players.”

It wasn’t until the third quarter that Burlington started to pull away. By the end of the quarter, Burlington was leading by 17 points.

Today marks the third and final game in Burlington’s Preseason Tournament, where the Wildcats will play Anderson County.

“We have a really tough team (today),” Reed said. “We’re still a little nicked up from football season, but our kids are getting better.”

Olpe boys 60, Waverly 36

Friday night’s game ended in victory for the Olpe Eagles, as they defeated Waverly on their home court.

With a 21-point lead after the first half, the Eagles maintained their distance and finished the game ahead by a score of 60-36.

“The big thing was the first quarter,” coach Chris Schmidt said. “ We hit some of our shots, and we really got going so that we were able to hit some easy buckets.”

One of the biggest point-scorers in the game was Seth Pargman, who had a total of 15 points. Other major contributors were Dallas Burenheide with 11 points and Jordan Pargman with 9 points.

One of Waverly’s starting players and key scorers, Matt Coursen, fouled out of the game.

Flinthills boys 58, Chase County 54

Friday night marked a close victory for the Flinthills Mustangs as they got by the Chase County Bulldogs, 58-54. The Mustangs domintated the first half, going into the second half with a 20-point advantage over the Bulldogs.

“If our team could ever figure out how to play defense in the first quarter, we’d be a really good team,” Chase County coach Landon Hinkson said. “We did play a good second half, but it’s hard to come back from a 20-point deficit.”

Leading the Mustangs on the scoreboard was Kiel Riemann with 20 points, but he didn’t win the game on his own. Key players for the Mustangs included and Grant Vogt with 18 points and Nate Nelson with 16 points .

“Our key players tonight were Joe Heathman and Lee Glanville,” Hinkson said, “They did everything. They really played well in the second half, offensively and with rebounds.”

Both teams suffered from foul trouble. Chase County lost two of their tallest starters — Lee Glanville and Eli Fowler — while Flinthills lost Tyler Wilson, a 6-foot-4 center.

Northern Heights boys 71, Herington 43

With Friday night’s 71-43 victory against the Herington Railers, the Northern Heights Wildcats are 1-1 in the Herington Tournament.

“In general, I felt like the first quarter we came out and we didn’t have a lot of execution,” Herington coach Tony Hoops said, “We played like Northern Heights wanted us to play.”

The Railers played well in the first half but couldn’t quite finish out the game. Herington’s Kris Mueller had 11 points and Coty Miller scored nine to lead their team in scoring.

The Wildcats had several players who helped in the game-winning total, as Rick Hobson finished with 12 points, J.W. Roeder added 12 points and Jake Weakley chipped in 12 points.

Burlingame boys 54, Hartford 45

Burlingame connected on 15-of-20 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the nine-point victory over Hartford.

Zach Dodson led the Bearcats with eight fourth-quarter points, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Hank Zerbe added seven fourth-quarter points.

Dodson finished with a game-high 17 points, while Zerbe added 15. Chris Patterson (11) and Colten Hoffman (10) also hit double figures for Burlingame.

Mickey Matthews paced Hartford with 11 points.

Lyndon boys 43, Marais des Cygnes Valley 42

Quinton Testerman hit a 3-pointer with less than 15 seconds remaining to give Lyndon the 1-point victory.

Trailing 42-40, Lyndon’s Kade Nielson penetrated the MdCV 2-3 zone and kicked out to Testerman, who made the open shot for the lead. A desperation heave from the Trojans at the buzzer was no good.

Quinton Testerman led Lyndon with nine points. David Becker paced all scorers with 17 for MdCV.
