EHS Swim and Dive takes 2nd at home invitational

The Emporia High swimming and diving team began its season with a second-place finish at Thursday’s Emporia Invitational, led by strong showings from the Spartans’ relay teams.
Emporia’s 200-yard medley relay, featuring Dillon Suprian, Miles Ringgold, Cody Yevak and Tyler Michales, finished sixth; the 200-yard freestyle relay, featuring Aaron Clark, Adam Coburn, Ringgold and Sergio Segura, finished fifth; and the 400-yard freestyle relay, featuring Clark, Coburn, Michales and Segura, finished third.
The three relay finishes brought in a combined 86 of Emporia’s 385 total points, leaving the Spartans behind only first-place finisher Olathe East, which totaled 493 points.
The top individual performance of the day went to Clark in the 100-yard freestyle, as he turned in a time of 53.90 seconds to finish second to Washburn Rural’s James Ungerer (51.64). Sergura (57.62) came in fourth in the event.
Clark finished near the top of the placings in the 50-yard freestyle race, coming in third in a time of 23.83 seconds, while Segura (7th, 24.62) and Ringgold (11th, 27.35) also scored points for the Spartans.
The EHS divers also came up big, with three divers finishing in the top six. Derek Krause led the way with a third-place finish with 158.00 points, followed by Mason Mounkes at fifth (146.80) and Brian Tabares at sixth (143.75). Krause and Mounkes, both freshmen, were competing for the first time in high school.
Other notable finishes were: fourth-place finishes by Michales in the 500-yard freestyle and by Ringgold in the 100-yard breaststroke; a fifth-place finish by Coburn in the 200-yard IM; eighth-place finishes by Scott Peterson in the 200-yard freestyle, by Yevak in the 100-yard butterfly, by Andrew Wayman in the 500-yard freestyle and by Michael Stauffer in the 100-yard breaststroke; a ninth-place finish by Wayman in the 200-yard freestyle; and a 10th-place finish by Suprian in the 100-yard backstroke.
Emporia High will play host to another home invitational at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
