It’s time to renew burn permits in Lyon County. Current burn permits expire on Dec. 31.
Rick Frevert of Lyon County Emergency Management said the permits are free, will be issued immediately and will be good through Dec. 31, 2007. A resolution passed by the board of county commissioners requires those intending to conduct an open burn in the county outside incorporated cities to contact the Sheriff’s dispatch at 342-5545 before and after the burn.
The cities that do not require a county burning permit are the city of Emporia, Allen, Americus, Olpe, Admire and Reading. Citizens should check with their city officials for local regulations and whether burn permits are needed for open burning.
County permits for 2007 are available at Olpe City Hall; Americus City Hall; Hartford City Hall; Reading City Hall; in Emporia the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Lyon County Courthouse; in Admire from LeRoy Boline or Ron Kuhn.
Other information on permits:
• Permits are issued to the individual who is doing the burn, not the location in the county regardless of the person’s address.
• If several individuals are helping with a controlled burn only one permit is needed.
• Information needed when a burn is called in is the permit number, name of the person doing the burn, address of the burn to take place, time reported and time ended.
• Permits are not needed to burn household trash. There is no specific type of container to burn trash, however, the person burning is liable for any damages and subject to a fine if the fire gets out of control.
