Hobson’s 14 points leads Northern heights in win

Wednesday, December 6, 2006

The Northern Heights Wildcats started off the season with a victory, defeating Hope by a score of 59-36.

“We had a nice opening to our season,” Northern Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “We felt that with our depth that we would have an advantage over Hope. We were able to play 15 players in the game and got out younger players some valuable minutes.”

Northern Heights’ Rick Hobson scored 14 points to lead the way for the Wildcats.

“I felt like we played with aggression but that we need to improve on the back ends of the floor.” Massey said. “We were able to really extend our lead in the fourth quarter off of several steals by Cody Neidfeldt. I was very pleased with the play of our posts; we got very solid play out of Hobson, (Haydon) Parks, (Derek) Parks and Heins on the boards.”

Northern Heights next squares off against Herington at the Herington Tournament.

Flinthills boys 81,

Hartford 58

Sixteen seemed to be the lucky number for the Flinthills Mustangs as they defeated the Hartford Jaguars, 81-58, on Tuesday night. All three of the Mustangs’ top scorers — Jeremy Jackson, Nate Nelson and Tyler Wilson — scored 16 points in the victory.

Flinthills jumped out to a 26-13 first-quarter lead and pushed the advantage to 45-26 by halftime.

The Mustangs’ Jeremy Jackson fouled out toward the end, but even with the loss of one of their leading scorers, the Mustangs went on to victory.

Flinthills will play the Chase County Bulldogs next, while Hartford will play Burlingame.

Chase County boys 39, Lyndon 36

Lyndon’s furious fourth-quarter rally came up short, as Chase County escaped with the three-point victory.

“I was happy that we won,” Chase County coach Landon Hinkson said. “I was very pleased with our defensive play, but we missed way too many free throws.”

Lyndon was outscored in each of the first three quarters before making its move in the fourth. Trailing 31-21 entering the final period, the Tigers actually took a two-point lead before missing the front end of a pair of one-and-ones that helped give the advantage back to the Bulldogs.

Chase County was led by Brian Palermo’s 16 points.

Quinton Testerman paced Lyndon with 10 points. Justin Bartkowski added nine, with Will Whitaker contributing eight.

Herington boys 59,

Centre 53

Herington grabbed a lead in the second quarter and hung on from there, taking a six-point victory over Centre,

The Railers actually had a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter before almost watching it slip away.

“We didn’t make the plays down the stretch,” Herington coach Tony Hoops said, “but we did enough to win, I guess.”

Herington was led by senior Coty Miller, who scored 16 points. Anthony Scott added 15 for the Railers.

The Railers picked up a win in their first game of the season.
