Benefit art show draws crowds

Despite colder-than-usual temperatures, about 300 people attended the Plumb Place art show Friday and Saturday.

The show is principally a fund-raiser for the renovation of Plumb Place, a historic home that now provides transitional housing for women in need. Plumb Place director Jill Wheeler said this morning that the event raised about $300 for the house all together.

The event also raised $200 for art scholarships at Emporia State University. That will be supplemented further by next summer’s “Art in the Garden” show at Toad Hollow, scheduled for June 1-2, 2007.

Artist Terry Maxwell, one of the organizers, said attendance was down from last year when about 500 came to the “Artists’ Holiday Open House” as the event is formally known.

“The weather hurt us,” Maxwell said. “But all in all, it was a very successful event. The people who came had a good time, most of the artists did well and we’re already planning next year.”

“It was good,” Maxwell said. “It was real good.”

Participating artists each donated a work for Plumb Place’s auction next spring.
