 Holiday events

Plans for the holiday season in Americus include a lighted parade, a visit by Santa Claus and a lighting contest. The Americus Chamber of Commerce said the theme for the parade is “Wish Upon a Star.” The parade is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today. Units will line up from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Main and Walnut streets.

Parade prizes will be awarded in three categories, best depiction of the parade theme, most original use of lights and judges’ choice.

Bicycle entrants must wear helmets and all entries must be lighted. In case of bad weather, the parade will be canceled.

For information or to enter call (620) 443-5546. Entries may be made in advance or the evening of the parade.

The Americus United Presbyterian Church, 557 Broadway St., will serve chili, vegetable, potato soup, and desserts beginning at 4:30 p.m. and after the parade. Donations will be accepted for church repairs. For information, call Lloyd Brown, (620) 443-5266.

The chamber of commerce will sponsor the lighting contest. The time for judging will be announced soon. Prizes will be awarded for the best use of lights, the best lawn scene, the best commercial display and the best traditional display. For information, call Bill Yeager, (620) 343-8832.
