EHS comes in 5th at home invite

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

— The Emporia High girls golf team got its season started Tuesday at its home course, the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

The EHS girls finished fifth out of six teams with a combined score of 233. Council Grove took home the team title with a score of 201, boosted by having three top-5 finishers.

EHS sophomore Maryann Bennett was the highest placer for the Lady Spartans, as she took home an eighth-place finish with a nine-hole score of 53.

Freshman Hannah Watkins also came through with a solid performance, as she finished in a three-way tie for 14th with a score of 58, just three shots outside the top 10.

“I was really pleased with the way Maryann played, and Hannah Watkins’ score was a pleasant surprise as well,” EHS coach Rick Eckert said. “Compared to where we were a couple years ago, a team score of 233 looks really good right now.”

Freshman Rachel Clopton and senior Amber Richard finished in a four-way tie for 22nd with a score of 61, senior Alyssa Coffelt finished with a 63 to earn a tie for 27th and senior Aubrey Koeppe finished with a 66 to finish 33rd.

“We had some upperclassmen that were a little disappointed with their performances, and I look at that as a good thing,” Eckert said. “That means they have high expectations for themselves and that they want to get better.”
