Saturday was a record-setting day for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Emporia

The 25th year for the national campaign, The National Association of Letter Carriers and Salvation Army teamed up to stock the shelves of local food pantries. According to Janet Way, letter carrier for the Emporia Post Office, by the end of the day Saturday, with more to count, totals indicated more than 20,000 pounds of food were collected.

“We had 18,000 (pounds) last year, so we beat it by a ton,” Way said. “It’s awesome; this community is amazing when it comes to giving.”

Suzanne Worthen-Miller, emergency services and volunteer coordinator for the Salvation Army, said volunteers worked on sorting food brought by the postal workers. All food collected during the drive will go toward helping needy families in Lyon County.
