The North Lyon County Board of Education approved the sale of the former Reading Elementary building at a special meeting Friday at Northern Heights High School in Allen.

The sale to Lions, LLC for $20,000 passed by a unanimous, 5-0 vote. Friday’s resolution approved the amount and allowed Board President Matt Horton to sign documents related to the sale.

It was a quick turnaround for USD 251, which approved a resolution to list the building for sale at its regular meeting on April 10. The asking price was $20,000.

“I was amazed we were able to sell it so quickly,” USD 251 Superintendent Mike Mathes said. “What I was most pleased about was that we got a local buyer. I think it will be good for the district and good for the community.”

Mathes said he had heard rumors about how Lions, LLC intends to use the building, but was unable to confirm if they are true.

The sale of the former Reading Elementary building closes the book on what has been long and contentious chapter in the history of the district. The board voted to close the elementary and put all K-5 classes under one roof in Americus on April 11, 2018.

Mathes said as this chapter closes, he is focused on the future of the district.

“I’ve only been here a year, so I have chosen not to look at the past but to focus on how we can move forward,” he said. “Hopefully we can come together and move forward.”
