An Emporia man was not harmed Wednesday night after his vehicle caught fire east of Emporia.

At approximately 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Early located a vehicle fire in the 1700 block of Road R1 — about four miles east of Emporia.

The driver was identified as 26-year-old Robert G. Watson of Emporia. He was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion in the 1700 block of Road R1 when he heard a loud noise come from the engine compartment, according to a statement from Early.

Watson was not injured.

“Watson advised a check engine light appeared on the dash panel,” Early wrote. “Watson was able to get the vehicle onto the side of the road to check his vehicle. Watson discovered a fire in his engine compartment. Watson was in the process of calling 911 when he was located.”

The Emporia Fire Department and District 5 Fire Department were dispatched to the scene and were able to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is believed to be mechanical.
