Illegal immigrants. That is all anyone has said...but I guess some of you will twist that to make it what you want to believe they mean.

The "unless you are an american indian, you are an illegal alien" argument fails in and of itself. In order to be illegal there would need to be some sort of laws on the books concerning the action. There were no immigration laws 200-300 years ago, therefore the people that came over during that time were not "illegal". American Indians had no laws concerning immigration, despite what people who make that argument try and suggest.

The previous comments were removed for these reasons:

Kansasforlegalimmigration posted what looked like a news story without citing sources. If it wasn't a news story, it was written in first person about legislative action without identifying the purported source.

Wirewatt's comment was removed for a racial slur.

CAFEmporia, I'm sure you'll understand that your post had to be removed for repeating the slur.

All posts may be reposted if these violations of policy are addressed by the authors.

Folks in Emporia might be interested in these two postings. The second one appeared in a Kansas City newspaper. It confirms the information in the first link.

Gwen, I do not mind that slur being removed at all. I found it very offensive, as anyone should. Thank you.

Here's an interesting take on the situation across the border.I thought the last half dozen lines pretty much said it all.

My comments didn't make a racial slur, I beg your pardon. If making statements about the Health Department is a slur, well excuse me.
I think how you edit comments for printing in the paper is wrong as it changes meaning and then printing them six weeks later. I would really like to know what you thought was a slur. Please email it to me, thank you.

All I see is here is an endless stream of useless rhetoric. The bottom line is clear and well defined. An illegal immigrant is illegal. By Merriam-Webster definition, illegal means "not lawful; not sanctioned by official rules; criminal, illegitimate, illicit, wrongful." Actions speak louder than words so I have been taking action.

For instance, I have always been a financial supporter of The Salvation Army. Two years ago, before writing my sizeable annual check or donating my usual cases of canned foods to their food drive, I called the Salvation Army. I asked if they could guarantee none of my contributions would be used to subsidize or benefit illegal aliens. Their response was that they "help anyone who needs it, legal or otherwise." I responded by not donating a penny or can of food since. When my local bank (of 12 years) added "press 1 for English" on the automatic teller machine and lobby signs in Spanish, I told the manager that, as an American, it offended me that they would prostitute American heritage for the almighty (illegal) dollar. She seemed unconcerned so I closed all my accounts and sought another bank that didn't sanction & support criminal behavior. I couldn't find one in Emporia, so I now bank out of Topeka. I even bought my new car in Topeka because the local dealer had a big "Se Hablo Espanol" sign in the showroom window so I backed out and drove on. I know some of you will think I am extreme or radical but I assure that is not the case. I am just mad and sad about our nation, and our people, sitting silent while a 3rd world nation invades our country and destroys our heritage and culture. What we allow we condone and what we condone we deserve. If you want to stop the invasion of illegal aliens you need to stop talking and start doing. You have power and the ability to make a significant impact, but only if you are willing to stop flapping your gums and take action.

I wouldn't classify it all as useless rhetoric. Lots of people read here that might just be getting their eyes opened up to things they didn't really spend much time thinking about before.
As for actions, there are actions we can all take. A couple years ago my roof needed replaced after a big hailstorm. Tons of roofing jobs ongoing in the neighborhood. Most with illegals. I took the time to search out a company that did NOT hire illegal aliens. (You know, SOMEHOW they managed to find Americans that would do the jobs that lazy Americans won't do). I'm totally happy with the job, and comparing the cost to my next-door neighbor, who hired a company employing a crew of undocumented workers, our cost was basically the same (I say basically, because his roof was more square footage, so his actually cost more, but doing the math it was approximately the same per foot).

Good call, open_eyes: I used a poor choice of words. Much of what has been said is not "useless rhetoric". Heck, it inspired you and me to respond! I applaud your decision on the new roof. If everyone took a stand like you did the situation would dramatically improve. Thanks for calling me on the carpet. I needed that.

This is not useless rhetoric at all. In fact, reading about other opinions and experiences gives us all something to think about. I remember how an entire crew of roofers were removed from my roof by the police a couple of years ago and they were all hauled off. The job was finished by the boss himself and one other worker. I have often wondered if those men who were hauled off were ever paid what was due them. But I didn't think to ask about citizenship when I contracted with the roofer. Now I would definitely think about it.

My sister lives in Las Vegas, and anyone who works in that city must have a sheriff's card. You must register with the sheriff's department and have a background check before you can work in the Vegas area. Of course, the reason for this is to keep out the criminal element, but I can see where it could work anywhere, and can be used to screen any number of situations, citizenship being one. However, this would not work in areas where day laborers offer services for cash.

Of course there is a lot to think about, and it doesn't help when local industry ignores the law by hiring undocumented workers.

No problem, bjnemp. I think we all get frustrated at times that no matter how much we complain, our elected legislators still seem to turn a deaf ear. Glad to hear that you take action, congrats.
That's good to hear about that law in Las Vegas, also, create. Gee, wonder how long before someone starts complaining about the law being "racist"????? They probably already have, I'm sure......

Open_eyes:

Remember the argument about criminalizing of "illegal" immigrants...that argument exists because America's "CIVIL LAW" inherited from the British sytem governs 'squatting'...Squatting in Europe (specifically England) is not criminal...notice how they liked the New World...You can park yourself in somebody's front yard and start living there and it is quite alright...unless, of course, the current owners raise a fuss...then you might be sued in a civil court...

Here's another little tidbit for you just for good measure:
Currently 50% of the major immigrating groups: Chinese, Vietnamese, and Hispanic immigrants, from day one can speak English...by the 3rd generation 97% of Hispanic immigrant families "CANNOT" speak Spanish...as my daddy always use to say, "Stick that in your corncob pipe and smoke it"...Actually, I added the corncob pipe...generational poetic license, you see.
