If I have to make do with what I have, I think our elected officials need to do the same. If I can't afford to buy a new desk, why do I have to help pay for one for the Extension office? Put a slab of wood over a couple of stacks of concrete blocks - heh heh.

mythoughts-What is going on locally is what is known as the local version of PORK BARREL SPENDING, it has been going on all over and will continue until the common ordinary Jill and Joe citizen put a stop to it. What you say in your comment about the concrete blocks and wood is amusing but not funny, if our elected officials had to do exactly as you suggest because the average citizen no longer will pay for their luxury or their outrageous wage for work performed, then maybe the elected officials will wake up and smell the coffee !

Worth repeating:....check out
to see which local businesses have not paid their sales tax. Put Lyon into the search box. This is not money for the business to keep, it was paid by customers who expect it will be paid in a timely fashion to the state(and then sent out to the cities and counties), not kept by the business to earn interest for that business or to improve that business.

orlando-The only problem with putting a name on a delinquent tax list is, that is all it is, a name on a list, if the state, county and city governments aren't aggressivly trying to collect these delinquent taxes a simple name on a list will do no good.
I would suggest, that if these various government agencies know where the business that is delinquent on taxes is located and I'll bet they do, then they need to go to these businesses or individuals with a court order and either collect the delinquent taxes owed or seize the business, or individuals property and assets and sell these for whatever money they can get to go toward paying the delinquent debt and I'll bet you that if these businesses or individuals knew that they could lose their business and property the delinquent tax bill would be miraculously be paid, afterall if the common ordinary Jill or Joe fails to pay his property tax, etc. their property is seized and sold for whatever proceeds can be raised to pay the tax debt.

Interesting that Madelynn's is no longer on the list! Hmmm....must have paid her taxes.----finally.

Orlando- You may have missed my previous comments....Madelynn's never owed taxes...it was a paperwork error on the State's end. After several weeks of phone calls, bringing in an attorney, accountant and bank then making a trip to Topeka, Yes, yesterday they did finally take our name off the list, because of their error!

Thanks everyone for the negative comments though...so easy to jump to accuse, but not so much to apologize. We have had 1...yes just 1 business step up, offering advice in correcting the situation because she had gone through a similar situation.

Hopefully we can put this blog and situation to rest now!

Why should we need to pay more tax? From what I am hearing, city officials just keep taking it for themselves! So what good would raising it do other that to line their pockets?

LOL! I hope they never recover from this. They had terrible service and prices. There's a lesson here; you gotta pay your taxes, kids.

Your glee at someone elses misfortune is to SAY THE LEAST: SAD.

I don't know if I'd call it "misfortune," Steve. Businesses that collect sales taxes must then turn that money over to the state. It isn't profit. I'm not reminding you personally, after all, you're a business man, you already know that. I'm just making a general comment.

State and City governments depend on sales tax collections to provide services to the public. With the state cutting services, even in the area of law enforcement, we as citizens are being robbed by those who do not pay the sales taxes they have collected up front at the point of sale.

Equally so, those who don't pay their property taxes are just as guilty of robbing us all.

Our own taxes go up when there is a shortfall. That is what is sad.

I AM NOT GIVING ANYONE A PASS!

Sales and witholding taxes are collected and paid to the proper taxing entities.
It has to be done and to not do it the business will end up like the one above.

What is sad that any Emporian would take such glee in another business closed, more people out of work, and another huge empty store front in Emporia.

The poster stated "LOL" and "I hope you never recover from this". Twist the knife a little more.

I agree with Steve on this, at the very least until we hear the other side of the story.

Side note.. How many businesses have closed in the last month or so, and how many are going to be closed soon?

Hastings, Papa Murphy's, Detroit laid off 75 people. Has anyone else heard the rumor that Staples might be closing?

create (anonymous) says...

Don't yell at me, Steve! A simple retort would work.

My problem was with the word "misfortune" when it was really not that all. If the story is true, then it was negligence.

I have not heard any rumors about Staples closing, but were it true, I'd certainly be sad because they have always had such great bargains. What's more, they treat teachers especially well. In fact, I'm headed out there today to buy some blank CD's to put in a care package for the troops in Afghanistan.

Just as an aside, items for those CARE packages are being collected at Town Crier Bookstore. It's getting cold there so disposable heat pads will be welcome. Also, snacks like beef jerky, other junk food, movies, music, copy paper, reminders of Kansas like magazines or newspapers, or how about a letter saying a simple hello-your-service-is-appreciated. I'm writing one of those right now to slip in with the CD's.

Steve_Corbin (anonymous) says...

sorry create,

My yell was directed at no-one directly.

You are entirely correct about the negligence of failing to pay taxes, (if that is what happened).

Having been in business for 30-some years, I have been in the position myself, during hard times, of ; should I pay that sales tax bill this week or use the money left in the checking account to pay the employees? Then I can make up the sales tax next week when business improves. And then something else comes up. That can get a business person in trouble. And I am not making excuses, just explaining how some small businesses operate. No matter what I can guarentee you the state, or fed will get their money, one way or another, and usually with interest and a big fat penalty.

And kudos for the donation to Harmon and the troops. I'm going to try to get a bunch of beef jerkey rounded up to send.

Thanks for the comeback, Steve. I understand where you're coming from with regard to making decisions about cash flow when the cutting edge gets as thin as that of a razor.

Speaking of cash flow, I wonder if Methusla has heard from any of the people to whom he sent letters re: establishing their businessses here.

How about it, Methusla?

In Emporia, Madelynn's had somewhat of a monopoly on bridal dresses/tux rentals and so forth. The way I see it, with Madelynn's out of the way, there will be a void in that part of the market. Sounds like a great opportunity for a new business to come in and fill that void! Maybe the new business will actually treat their customers right and hire decent employees. Heck, they might even pay their taxes!
What I'm saying is, we shouldn't feel bad for a terrible business closing and terrible employees losing their jobs if it means a new business will open with more deserving people behind the counter. This is why I hope they never recover; so something better can take their place.

Hey, what a grand idea! It would work. I'm sure Mark has room back there for a fitting room and one of the gals or guys could learn how to measure for a tux.

Hey Mark, weddings and proms!

I can hear a new motto now -- "We can dig your ditches and rent your britches!"
