Bless my neighbors. I'm so happy to be living in my quiet neighborhood where neighbors still wave and smile at each other. We are from all walks of life. Some are active professionals, some are blue-collar folks, some are retired, some are homemakers. When one neighbor got orders to Iraq, we all tied yellow ribbons around our trees.
Some have gardens, some don't. Some have fences, some don't. Some have pets, some don't. One thing we all have in common is tolerance.
Every New Year's Day, we all get together for about three hours at one neighbor's house, a tradition I have always enjoyed. Younger ones help older ones across icy sidewalks and we all gather in front of a roaring fire to talk about what's been going on in our lives. We are always joined by new folks who are renting in the neighborhood. It's a comfortable feeling to have neighbors like mine. I wish the folks on Market St. were as lucky.

Super Nanny - How niave your statement. Why don't you take some time and INVESTAGATE the land where the CITY built the beautiful new swimming pool for little Johnny and his friends. No one has died there yet.

create: Thanks for a heartwarming story that renews our faith in humankind in general and Emporians specifically. I have made some posts that were pretty critical of some of our city's leaders, and even though I strongly believe in the positions that I have taken, I don't always feel very good about saying harsh things. In the end, even though we clearly have lots of problems right now, Emporia is a good place to be. Especially on your block.

Thanks for saying so, jayhawker. I'm a transplant from Hawaii to Emporia and have lived here since 1975. I too have been critical from time to time. The closest analogy I can draw is that it's like adjusting a picture on the wall that gets crooked once in awhile. We tweak it, we don't throw the picture out. I have always loved this town. I feel healthy here.

remember when they tore down the wendys on 6 th and found the ground was contaminated by a gas station that had been there, lots of people had eaten there while it was wendys without getting sick.

caring4u...sorry I have only been in Emporia for less than 5 years. Did not know anything was wrong with the land where the swimming pool sets....as I am sure others did not also. But I dont see many kids eating the dirt at the swimming pool. All I am saying is if you dumped harmful things in your yard and it is obvious, lets just get it cleaned up and move on. I love Emporia...I love my neighbors and it is really to bad that people have to act they way they do sometimes. We should all work together to make Emporia clean and healthy for us and our children, and be proud of the town we call home!

I would like to to press the issue that is in the actual news story NOT hearsay that Mr. Hayes has said John Roberts has been dumping desiel fuel for a number of years. Once again good subject! if it were true wouldn't those number of people have gotten sick? I am sure there would have been some reprecussions. I mean seriously.
Even now I am sure someone has bought from Hayes's COMMERCIAL business here recently without knowledge of what's going on .... Are they sick?

so all this bickering is two buisiness men who can t get along well enough to live beside each other, maybe they just need to drop the entire investigation and make both guys get permits or move their business to an area zoned for commercial business.

well decided to drive down to your fair city and look for myself.what a wasted trip. these people havent hurt anything but the weeds in their yard couldnt have got to much spray anywhere else cause the weeds on both sides of their house seem to be flourishing along with flowers and trees. only thing i seen was somebody planted their trees to close to each other. they should spend some time trimming the dead limbs out stead of runnin all over crying to different departments. there are bout 320 to 330 plants at both places not 60 the ones on the other street are loaded with tomatoes but couldnt see others ones for all the weeds. 2-4d is designed to kill weeds. sure glad i dont live there cause you people dont seem to be real bright.

Here's a prime example of a small part of the community population sucking up the resources of multiple agencies. These folks are sucking up the time of resources of multiple city agencies, county and state agencies and sucking a bunch of well intentioned folks here into their Hatfield/McCoy feud.
It's time for these folks to act like adults and learn some understanding and civility. My understanding this "war" has been going on well over 7 years now. If I was the rest of the neighborhood, I'd sign a petition to have all three groups removed. No wonder neighborhood associations and covenants are getting to be so popular.
