Are there any people out there who have helped make Emporia a better place to live in 2009?
Your pick is?

Megan the bartender. She has been a tremendous help getting me through 2009.

Steve_Corbin (anonymous) says...
Henry, I'm glad Megan could be so helpful, but, hey, I am serious.
Thanksgiving is fast approaching and the year is coming to the end.
Surely there is someone here that people think have done something to make Emporia a better place? Someone we can be thankful for?
Remember Ms. Walkers editorial about trying to be positive ?

O.K. there is one suggestion.
Anyone else?
Has anybody other than Teresa Walters done anything this year to help the city of Emporia?

Steve,
Perhaps the question should be who has done the most to hurt Emporia and its taxpayers most !
Just might get more responses !

Steve_Corbin (anonymous) says...
Well guys I am beginning to wonder about that. Remember Ms. Walkers idea for a Why Emporia is a good town to live in column idea? I have'nt seen anything on that either.
Surely there is some un-sung hero out there.
Someone who helps their neighbor, someone who has done something for Emporia for no other reason than to be helpful.
Maybe some of our hometown people serving in the armed forces?
A worker at the local grocery store who always smiles and treats you nice?
A volunteer worker that gives freely of their time?
There has GOT to be someone out there that brings a positive thought about Emporia to your mind when you think about them.
COME ON PEOPLE!

As for " Thanksgiving" , I am thankful that " GOD " has decided to let me, my family, friends and those I love and respect live and survive for another year and hope and pray " GOD " will decide to do so for some time to come !
As for " who has made Emporia a better Place ? I can only think of a small few that have tried to keep Emporia a better and fairer place for everyone, but I will not name them and start that argument all over again !
As for actually making Emporia a better place, all I can say is. look around and count the closed or failing businesses, lack of jobs, increasing, taxpayer tax burden and people leaving Emporia, possibly because of the lack of tolerance for others, increasing tax burden, increase of reckless govt. spending and lack of jobs !
I am sorry, but I cannot think of or see how Emporia is being made better nor anyone who is making Emporia a better place ! However this is just my opinion !
I know their are those who will vehemently disagree, but that is their right and privilage !

methusla (anonymous) says...
Well, Steve, the only person or persons that I can think of, would be the ones or one who succeeded in convincing Hill's ( Procter and Gamble ) to locate, build a facility and bring some jobs to Emporia ! Those people did manage to help Emporia to some extent !
I know I have been at odds with the CC, CM, LCC, however if those entities and the people who serve on them were or had some part in it, then I think they should be recognized for their effort and I thank them for it ! But more needs to be done !

Here's somebody. I'm surprised his name didn't pop out earlier. Mark Shook of Water's Hardware is my nomination for someone who is always helping Emporia in one way or another. He always offers heavy equipment to use in various charity projects around town. What comes to mind immediately is the time volunteer Justin Klumpe of Olpe was painting the helicopter at the Veteran's Memorial. The lift Justin used to attain height was provided at no cost by Mark Shook from Water's Hardware. That's just one time. There have been many, many others when Mark offered his time or equipment to help out.

Both Mark and Justin were on my list also. I think Meth has a valid suggestion also. I Know there are more out there!
Let's get a positive outlook on this dreary day!

Mike helbert is a good guy.
What do you think he's done to make Emporia a better place to live in? I mean besides his service on the school board?

Taking a stand for the people he represents, in telling the rest of the board how the turf is simply not needed now. That to me is huge! He had the guts to do what was right!

I agree toofast and giggles Mike Helbert would be one to also get my vote !

Steve Corbin, Mike Helbert, Matt Slater and those who actively fought against the loss of an individual freedom in the recent " Smoke " storm also would get my vote !

O.k. I can see Mike H. public service and standing up against what most consider wastefull spending.
Matt and I were just being greedy so that dosn't count.
I know of a couple of people @ country mart north that have done a lot for the city.
Speaking of city, I know we all like to bad mouth the powers that be,but do any of you know of a city employee that has gone above the responsiblities of their job and done something to help make Emporia a better place to live? There is one on my list.
Do any of you have friends that volunteered their time on the cities "clean sweep" project?
That was quite a feat!

On second thought: Matt Slater was one of the driving forces behind our 4th of July activities along with the cream pie baker and the tamale seller.
Don't forget the sisters from the church.

A city employee of the year? That one's a cinch, Steve. My vote goes to the parking ticket guy. Thanks to him, and me because of him, the city hasn't declared bankruptcy yet. Thanks a lot, friend.
Ok, serious note. My vote goes to Mainstreet. What a great organization! They REALLY work hard to help out Emporia!
My second vote (it's ok, I'm with ACORN) goes to John Mallon and associates for the Granada. I know it opened last year, but is such a wonderful addition to Emporia, he should get it two years in a row.
Matt

it's O.K. Matt, you can vote for more than 1.
That vet guy Dr. Hendrickson?, I think was also heavily involved in getting the Granada done and opened.
And I know that you and the parking ticket guy are doing what you can to keep the budget balanced,(HAH), but he doesn't work for the city, (private contractor).
How about that little old church lady that has planted flower beds around the city for years? She was doing it for years before main street thought about it. I think she also does a lot of canning for the Fall Festival that's coming up.

How about Mike Turnbull from RBB?
It seems everyone in Emporia has benifited from his many donations to different causes. Seems like he is always getting hit-up. He has personally, (and with his help at the Trussler Fund) have done an awful lot for E.S.U.

There have been several good names mentioned here and I wouldn't begin to be so presumptuous as to try and pick a winner. But some of the people that do the most to make Emporia a good place to live for me are the ones I don't even know their names. They are the ones that smile and thank you for spending your money there...the money that goes to pay their wages. The people that make eye contact and smile and say hello as you walk down the street. Those are the people that make small town America so great...and so different from the big cities.
Those are the people that can turn a crappy day into a good one. What more could we ask

I don't know about helping the most in 2009 but I would like to say thanks to the EPD and EFD and the city workers that have been working since the snow started last night.I know it's part of the job, but working on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day deserves our extra thanks.
And thanks to cable 1 for getting my cable back on!
Merry Christmas to all!
