Sciguy I called a friend of mine who is on a school board to make sure I give you the right answer.
After 3 yrs. a new teacher is tenured, if they move to a different dist. they then have to teach 2 yrs. before they are tenured there.
After they are tenured, according to my friend, they are virtually impossible to get rid of.

I screwed up gang. The Dept. of Education submitted the lesson plans regarding Obama's speech, not the NEA. I wish my statement was true because the prospect of the Dept. of Education being in the bag for Obama is a much more frightening prospect than a union organization that I knew was in the bag for Obama to begin with.

I apologize for any confusion. I relied too much on a lazy media for my info. Fox news corrected me this morning. I regret the error.

I agree with Gwen that kids need to be exposed to different ideas. One of my favorite utube's is about Robert Welch. He predicted with uncanny accuracy today's problems back in 1958 and prescribed the solutions in 1974. These kids are the future of our nation and I think it is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the principles that has made our nation great. When Rockefeeler helped create the NEA, this drew national education to the left and now you know the rest of the story.

The congressional Reece Committee concluded that the Rockefeller Foundation was promoting Socialism through the public school systems and higher education. Those who control education over a perod of several generations control the nation. Google the Rockefeller File. This site will blow your mind. Obama needs to give these kids a pep talk to stay in school and succeed or they will have to consider politics, the only profession for which no preparation is thought necessary according to Robert Louis Stevenson.

I really don't see what the problem is here. First of all, if any one is taking the time to address our kids and tell them that it is important for them to stay in school...hey, I'm all for it. Furthermore, it seems that people don't give kids enough credit. In my household we are all very open about politics. When I was growing up it was adult business only and I was not invited to have any thought on the subject. I was sushed when I asked questions. Since my kids were in grade school political issues have been widely talked about at home, in school, and most of the time they brought it up. I have always been pleased that it is more talked about in school than when I was in school. Its important for them to understand what is going on in the world around them. It's also been quite interesting to hear their veiwpoints. I have never tried to sway them into thinking a certain way, and many times we have not agreed on certain issues and there have been many open debates in our house. My kids have been encouraged to think for themselves. I asked my son who is a junior this year if he had heard anything about hearing this speech in school. He says not from the teachers, and he also says that hearing the president tell them to school in school isn't by itself going to make a big difference. He suggests that what ought to happen is that people should not even have the choice to drop out of school. He thinks the idea that at 16 you have a choice is completely ridiculous. This from a kid who at one point hated school and could not imagine being there one day longer than he had to.
The bottom line for me is that I think our kids should be exposed to different things, and yes, I think they should hear directly from the president himself. Let them make up their own minds people, they are not stupid, and they are not going to turn into robots by hearing a speech. I would venture to guess that they are going to stay as headstrong as we were. And personally, I think that that kids need to hear the message at all levels that they are expected to stay in school and make something of their lives, regardless of what type of school they are in (private, public, whatever). I think it should come from the president, the governor, our city and county comissioners, and most of all they should hear it from their parents.

About halfway down are the lesson plans they put out, read them, please do, then come back and take your foot out of your mouth. They do not support an agenda(like the previous presidents did) unless you consider getting an education an agenda. It's scary stuff I know.

Goodoleboy,

I will take my foot out of my mouth as soon as you get in your time machine and go view those lesson plans before they were changed to be less incendiary. I figured since you favor yourself as all knowing you would have a time machine. The original version included an assignment for school children to write letters on "how they can help the president." I believe this is what caused the controversy and contributed to trust issues people are having with the president.

For everyone else without a time machine,

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/...

"The White House said Wednesday that the president's address is intended to be an inspirational, pro-education message to all students at the beginning of the school year. But critics objected to the language of one of the lesson plans, for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 6, which suggested that students 'write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.' Another assignment for students after hearing the speech was to discuss what 'the president wants us to do.'

The suggestion about writing letters has since been changed to: 'Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.'

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said the changes to the language are intended to make the lesson plans clearer. He added that the speech the president's speech will not be a policy speech, but is intended to encourage kids to work hard and commit to school."

I like the revision because it is specific to education and the president's goals regarding education. Not general in that it allows for too much interpretation and can go into other facets of his agenda if directed there. Which is what caused the uproar.

If it was a poorly written lesson plan, fine it was a poorly written lesson plan. It ticked a lot of people off.

Time machine? Uhh ok.. I'm not all knowing, just cautious enough to wait until today when the speech and lesson plans can be previewed in their finality. Everything before then was an assumption, which makes an .......... you get the point.

Far as agenda's go, Reagan did it, Bush Jr. did it, and that was just fine and dandy right? Because you agree with them?

"He added that the speech the president's speech will not be a policy speech, but is intended to encourage kids to work hard and commit to school.""

And this is exactly what Bush Sr. did, except he added in the "don't do drugs" tag. I ask you again, this is nothing new, why is it such a big deal? Explain please? Explain how other presidents did this and MORE yet no one here has said one thing derogatory about them as they have Obama? I am NOT a huge fan of Obama, but what is Fox News’s motto? "Fair and Balanced" right? Stop seeing party lines and start seeing that this is an influential person that wants to encourage our youth to do well in school, that so hard to fathom? Hardly takes a time machine to figure this out, just a bit of common sense and patience to wait and see what the final version is. Finally, if you don’t like it, censor your kids from it! But let eveyone else have their choice on the matter, freedom right?

Goodoleboy,

Nice try attempting to frame my point regarding the lesson plans as an assumption. The first version of the lesson plan was NOT marked as a "DRAFT". If it was it should not have been disseminated until it was finalized. The lesson plans were NOT posted for review or asking for notes on how they could be improved. The final draft was delivered and the language was changed only when opposition weighed in. I assumed nothing. Drafts don't get published until they are approved.

Not really sure where you are going with the past administrations talking to students. I don't have the text of their speeches and even if I did they aren't the president right now. I do know this, and if you read my previous posts you would know that I didn't pay any attention to what previous administrations had to say when I was in school (K-12). Most likely because we weren't assigned work, or tested on the speech. We were already getting solid guidance from our teachers.

I don't have to frame anything, until the speech is delivered nothing is final, people have never deviated from a plan before or revised something at the last minute, no never! Facts are facts, and the facts are that until today everything was an assumption, today was the day given for the final version, so weigh in now all you like, I see zero wrong with what the president said. Point me to parts where he has an agenda, I read the text and I'm having a hard time seeing this evil liberal brainwashing socialist I've been hearing about.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/...

And in this link are the text versions of Reagan and Bush SR. address (which I really have no problem with), and I can tell you this, if Obama offered up as much as Reagan did people would be screaming on these boards, and that in a sense it what makes me feel sorry for a lot of close minded people around here that can't set politics aside for 18 minutes to let the sitting President reinforce how important education is to our children.

Here's an interesting little snippet from the Washington Examiner:

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opi...

Congressional Democrats started an investigation over George's Bush's interaction with students in 1991. The Dept of Education was investigaged, Lamar Alexander was called to testify about the matter. The conclusion - the administration hadn't done anything inappropriate.

This is what the NEA had to say:

"The National Education Association denounced the speech, saying it "cannot endorse a president who spends $26,000 of taxpayers' money on a staged media event at Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, D.C. -- while cutting school lunch funds for our neediest youngsters."

Goodoleboy

It could well be that this is equal opportunity stupidity. This seems to me to be a two way street. What amazes me is that there are quite a few who consider themselves enlightened enough to view those beneath their level of civic responsibility, intelligence, and savvy either unpatriotic, racist, stupid, crazy, living in caves, etc. That itself doesn't seem especially enlightened to me.

If what some of these folks is doing isn't really worthy of mention why are so many enlightened folks getting in such a lather about it? I haven't got a clue on what the answer would be. And, I'm not going to assume that it's because they hate the unenlightened or have some socialist agenda.

It seems to me that these folks have the right to speak or voice their opinions. I'll bet some of them have kids serving as cannon fodder in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. It also seems to me that they have a stake in national discussions. I know you're going to say that the same right applies to you. I agree. But if what you're saying is that we shouldn't be worried about what they say, I say leave them alone. That just might show a bit of maturity. But if what you're saying is that they're racists, crazy, unpatriotic fools, then I say you might do well to look into the mirror of your own soul to see what prejudices might be lurking around. That's where the rubber will meet the road and the histrionics just might end.

I appreciate the Gazette's picture on the home page of the its website about students listening to Pres. Obama's speech. It was a nice composition to include the class flag as well. However, I had hoped the Gazette's reporters would have interviewed more USD 253 staff as to let readers know of the district's policy. Perhaps, the district should consider formalizing a policy to govern elected leaders and others who wish to communicate with students in the future. I for one find it appropriate for the President to address students at the beginning of the schoo year. The same goes for the Governor. I thank the President for putting his speech online prior to delivery so that parents could see there was nothing political about the content.

I assume your referring to me in your post? If so call me a bully for using some freakin' common sense and waiting to see what the President delivered. What you call enlightened I call informed. I was listening to a radio this morning where callers where calling in defending keeping their kids home from school, and what really astonished me is when the host asked them if they had watched the speech or read the text versions almost everyone of them had not. So what exactly are they basing their judgment on? Yes it is everyone's right to have their opinions but when people fail to examine the issue and let their own personal PREJUDICES whatever they may be effect their decision making it says a lot to their credibility. This is not a partisan affair, I'll state right here that the Democrats acted like complete idiots back in 1991 with their antics towards GW Bush's speech. These are the leaders of our country and if they want to encourage our children to work hard and stay in school then I will support them %100 regardless of political affiliation. I see where allintogether has been quoted in the special section of the Gazette. "...he [Obama] planted the young girl in his town hall meeting in New Hampshire a few weeks ago to push his healthcare agenda."

I thought the following from May 2009 "Think Progress" was rather interesting given allintogether's take:

Throughout George W. Bush’s presidency, his handlers always made a special effort to ensure his appearances with regular Americans were scripted in such a way that shined the best possible light on Bush and his polices. Whether he was meeting troops in Iraq, leading “Ask President Bush” re-election campaign events, or trying to sell his (failed) Social Security reform plan, Bush always had a friend in the audience ready to ask a softball question or heap praise on the president. It appears that old habits die hard, as those attending Bush’s upcoming speech in Michigan will be forced to submit their questions ahead of time:

Former President George W. Bush will make a stop in Michiana on Thursday. He is scheduled to speak to the Economic Club in Benton Harbor this evening. Mister Bush will answer questions that have been submitted.

Just a little food for thought.

I didn't think you were crackinsack until that last comment. Now I agree with everyone else that you are crack. I think that all the animosity we all have toward each other will be a thing of the past when Obama addresses our school children next Tuesday and they bring home a message of hope to us that will surely cause the callouses on our hearts to soften and fall away. I'm very excited for that day to come! We are under a week now till that joyous and triumphant event will occur.

Join the club, seriouslyfolks! Jump on that hate bandwagon!
I apologize for my comment, but I meant no offense. I know you know how to use a search engine like Google, so you could have easily done a quick search if you really wanted to know who he was. Post something stupid and plan to get something stupid in return. If you can't take it, don't dish it out!
Do you know any good “yo mama” jokes?

I wasn't offended by your comment about Google but it did sound a lot like crack. As far as "hate bandwagons", they will be a thing of the past after this next Tuesday when Obama speaks to our school children and brings a message of hope, love, peace and loving hopeful peace that will surely spread like a wild prairie fire in the hearts of the youth and we as adults will be stired with emotion that we will not be able to not hug each other. It's goin' to be keen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judging from the number of speeches and talks by our new president, I believe Seriously's posts about next weeks speech will prove to be true:)

But then the more we hear from him the more we know.
Unlike George W. who hardly ever gave news conferences. Of course that was o.k. as everytime he spoke it kind of made you wince.

Seriously 4 President.
YOU COULD DO WORSE!

Next Tuesday will be a great great day for our nations school children when the President will address them with very good goodness and it will surely be grand. Being a very popular politician myself, I have seen some of the rough drafts of this speech and it is indeed full of fluffy good goodness. I will share with you what I have seen, sorta like a prophet would. Behold .........................

I believe the children are our are future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me
I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

Here is a rough draft of the speech before the racists got all upset because of their racialist racismness. I think it would have been great but I'm sure that whatever the speech will be it'll be GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!!!

Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more
Id love to change the world
But I dont know what to do
So Ill leave it up to you
Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly
Id love to change the world
But I dont know what to do
So Ill leave it up to you
World pollution, theres no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war
Id love to change the world
But I dont know what to do
So Ill leave it up to you

tbluma, "tenure" is a perpetual right to a job. Kansas law does not make provisions for tenure for public school teachers. What you are talking about is the granting of due process rights, where the teacher's dismissal must include a stated cause, and there are provisions like the right to a hearing to challenge the cause.

Prior to being hired for the fourth year (third, if a teacher has already had due process rights in the prior district), the teacher has no due process rights, and is typically dismissed by non-renewal--simply not being offered a contract for the following year, with no reason needed or stated. Once they begin teaching their fourth (or third) year, then they automatically have their due process rights.

It is certainly a lot more than employees in most non-academic jobs have, but it is not tenure as you see with collegiate academics.

I heard that Obama was going to get tenure after he gives his speech to the kids next Tuesday and he will be able to collect retirement immediately from all the school districts that listen to his speech as if he had been teaching there for 30 years. It sounds extreme but the speech is just going to be that good.
