Now that we have absorbed the no-smoking ban, I think it is time for Emporia to deal with the dog excrement problem. I am one of the one per cent of dog owners who cleans up after his or her dog. Yes, it's unpleasant, but my dog uses public land and kids play there. I discussed this with an acquaintance who does a semiannual journey around where her water-buffalo-sized dog walks to clean up his accumulated byproduct. That is not enough in my mind, but still better than most owners. Surely this is a form of littering and an afternoon of handing out citations at C of E Park would be beneficial.

OutsiderJ....I agree!
I always try....(sometimes I forget to change pockets when I change pants)....to carry plastic bags with me and use them anytime one of my dogs takes care of business in what I deem to be a sensitive place. By sensitive place I primarily mean peoples yards. I am much less careful about this when the offense takes place in an alley or fringe area....and in public parks. But if the city wants to start handing out littering tickets for dog poop in parks then they better do so in all city parks.....not just CofE park. I don't want my tax dollars spent protecting the de facto backyard of a few expensive houses if its not going to be spent on all parks.
What really burns me up are people that take it all personal. Like..."your dog pooped in my yard on purpose....I don't deserve this." Get real...I don't know one single dog owner that wouldn't love to have a dog potty trained to use a tiolet or litter box. Unfortunately dogs don't see it that way.

Another example of common sense and common courtesy.
We don't need another "BAN", just clean up after yourself and your pets.
Your courtesy will help keep others from doing the "BOOT SCRAPING BOOGIE".

Common courtesy, steve? Ha!
Sorry to burn you up, biscuit, but I live on a corner lot, and every single day there is more than one pile of dog do in my yard. Not just in the area between the sidewalk and street, mind you, but in my own yard. Maybe if it was just once in awhile, I'd be willing to look the other way. But this is every damn day. On top of that, a couple of these dogs are the size of horses!
On pretty days, I like to sit on my front porch swing. More often than not I am assaulted with the smell of what some discourteous soul's dog has done. Enough of that and you'd be disgusted like I am and burning up on my side of the fence, biscuit.
Speaking of fences, my back yard is fenced, thank goodness, so dogs can't go there. However, I have a raised bed vegetable garden and stray cats have been using the soft dirt there for a giant litter box. Now THAT is disgusting! Do you suppose I might have to worry about parasites? Do people who let their cats run free ever have them wormed?
Yes, this issue has hit a sore spot with me. And no, I am not a baby, just sick and damned tired of picking up after dogs when all their owners had to do was carry a plastic bag to pick up after their critters. I'll bet all these dog owners don't have piles of this stuff to deal with on mowing day now do they?
Please, have some respect for other people's property and pick up after your dog daily doings. Keep a supply of plastic bags next to the leash. That's all it takes.

And no, I am not for passing another bloody ban when all people have to do is exercise some common courtesy!

create......I was not implying that people should just let their dogs go wherever and I do have a supply of plastic bags with me about 98 percent of the time...the exception earlier noted. But some of the problems you speak of are caused by dogs running loose. I am just as sick of dealing with dogs...sometimes in groups of three or more......running around the neighborhood off leash and often with no human in sight. To me this is a much biggeer problem...and more potentially dangerous problem.....than my neighbors dog pooping in my yard.
One solution might be to get your self a dog and take him to to a little reciprical pooping. It probably wouldn't help your yard but it might make you feel better.....Just kidding!!

Thanks for the reply, biscuit, but these aren't dogs running loose. These are dogs on a leash that are being taken for a walk by their owners for exercise and relieving themselves. True.
Not long ago, I was on the front porch when a woman walked by with her dog and allowed it to go on my lawn right in front of me. "Would you please pick that up?" I requested. She shot me a dirty look and walked on leaving the stuff right where her dog had deposited it. So I told her to walk her dog on some other block.
Just yesterday, a man walked by with a huge dog who was sniffing for a place to go. I just said, "Please, not in my yard. Please." He yanked the dog further down the block and let it go on a neighbor's lawn. Like I said, I'm not for a ban, but these are the kind of mindless people who ask for one by their repeated disrespect.
Geez, why can't poople (spelling intended) let their dogs go on their own property before taking them for a walk? Seems so simple.
One problem is that since other dogs have marked my property, other dogs are going to smell that and they want to go there too. It's a natural thing for dogs to do. I don't have a showplace lawn, but those piles do leave yellow dried patches.

With the technology we have why can't we invent an animal that is smaller and more efficient than dogs? An animal that can be taught to do its binness in a specified place like a box that can easily be dumped into the trash. An animal that doesn't take up as much space. An animal that you can leave food for and it doesn't think it needs to eat it all at once. An animal that for the most part is self cleaning. An animal that is not so loud. An animal that knows to get exercise on it's own and doesn't need to be walked.
Can you imagine if such an animal existed? Well my peeps, I'm here to tell you that they do exist. They are called cats.
Another practical solution to your everyday problems, brought to you by Seriously R. Folks.

It sounds to me as if you have a bunch of inconsiderate jerks for neighbors and I'm sorry for you.
One problem is that dogs.....not unlike humans.....do not like to foul their own nest.....and will only do so when given no other choice. Its also a self defense measure from their wild days. The smell of their excrement attracted predators and other enemies to their den....so they avoided that by taking the problem elsewhere.
None of that solves your problem however....and I just offered it so as you might better understand the dog's view. The dog however is.....or at least should be.....under the control of his human. And it is their responibility to take care of this. I personally have no problems with tickets being issued to offending owners other than it's just one more thing for the police to have to deal with.
It's just too bad you can't legislate common sense and courtesy.

Actually, biscuit, the people in my block are great people who care about each other and would never let their pets go in other people's yards. These people I refer to are coming from many blocks away.
Thanks for the explanation about dogs and dens and wild days. I already knew that, but I also know that SOME owners themselves are just plain jerks. I like YY4U's method of returning those deposits and his new found name for a new group. Good one!
My complaints here don't mean that I am a pet hater. Au contraire. I have had many dogs in my life, the last one died at age 14, so I understand them. Right now I have a cat and he has a litter box.

On a personal note.....awhile back while walking my dogs I realized I had forgotten to bring any baggies. Well...sure enough.....one of them did his business in a sensitive area.
I had three choices,,,,,,leave it lay......use my hand......or use the only other thing I could find.....a five dollar bill.
And what choice did he make.....the crowd wonders in hushed silience.....THE FIVE DOLLAR BILL!

Hello hello. Hey heres a simple solution following the story. I have an open back and front yard. I must have very pleasant soil because dogs and cats like to drop a duece in my yard. Solution: I just pick it up, no whining, no complaing, just five minutes of my day. Once it is mixed with a mulch it actually Helps my grass grow, who wouldv'e thought fertilizer could be so cheap. I have been told dog excrement does not help a lawn but it has done wonders for mine.
Also most of the excrement has been provided by wandering dogs in the neighborhood, not by leashed animals. Although there have been a few leashed, when i ask the owner to clean up after the animal 98% of them are very compliant.

Well, now I always thought "dirty money" had to do with the drug trade. I would have never guessed it had to do with the poo trade. Gives "inflation" a whole new meaning. Maybe a garden hose with a good pressure nozzle would serve most everyone's purpose and If you miss the human, you could always aim for the dog/cat.
