buscuit - thank you for the info. I have never claimed that other news networks NEVER show another side - just that IMO what I have stated. Since we don't watch each others news that often, and we only see it broadcast on "our" news when it suits them, I don't see CNN critical of their excesses often, just as you don't see Fox critical of their own excesses often, but we both do. And yes, I think morning joe is one of the fairer shows out there. The link has been posted on here many times before about the UCLA study finding that "media bias is Real", in it they had individual shows from both Fox & CNN rated basically in a dead heat for balance. Overall, of the 20 major media outlets studied, 18 scored left of center, Fox was 1 of only 2 scoring to the right.

As for Olbermann...... I'm shocked.... good for him....thanks for the info. Maybe MSNBC is finally starting to figure out why they are so far behind in the ratings...... but I guess I'm talking more on an each individual issue. They didn't have anyone to disagree with Garafalo. Olbermann certainly didn't. And did they have someone on to defend Obama's refusal to seek punishment? That's more what I like to see - points and counterpoints both presented together. Not one right-wing story at 10:00, and a left-wing story on a totally different subject at 2:30.....

I can tell you one thing about response to the Prez extending Bush's Patriot Act defense - I've posted it several times and asked outright for posters here who were very vocal and critical of the PA when it was enacted. I have heard...... zilch..... and I posted things critical of the signs disrespecting Obama. Only the sound of chirping crickets.....and some people here were VERY vocal about it...... "before"......

open-eyes I can not explain the silence....and while you and I and two or three others have had this debalte going on for several days now....I have come more and more to feel like the lone voice in the wilderness. I wonder if all the others I have talked with that had views similar to mine have moved to a blue state, been converted to your point of view, or have just become bored with it all. I had intended to comment this morning about you points concerning Patrick Kelly. First...I have no doubt that Patrick's view is more often in line with mine than yours. But, as I'm sure you realize, it is always important to keep in mind the difference between news and opinion. Morning Joe is news....Olberman is opinion. Likewise Hannity is opinion, Bill O'Riley (sp..?) is opinion, and Patrick Kelly is opinion. As such, none have any journalistic obligation to offer oppossing views. To the extent that they do, it is usually just done as another way of bolstering their case. Since most newspaper editorials are written in conjunction with an editorial board they rarely reflect the views of only one person. I do not however know how the Gazette does it. But what with the availability of locally written guest columnist (perhaps you should look into that), and perhaps the opportunity for other Gazette staffers to present their views on occassion, more balance could be struck. After all, despite all the hyberbole, I too most value the opportunity to receive input from various sources and then decide for myself. That's why I am spending less and less time with opinion merchants and trying to spend more time watching straight forward news.

You're absolutely right, biscuit, but unfortunately in this country the masses are more and more blurring the line between hard news (fact) and opinion. I've seen quite a few "opinion" pieces put out some blatant lies (on both sides) that people seem to pick up on and immediately assume as fact. I'm not sure ANYONE sticks with "hard news" as much as we want and hope they do, Morning Joe included. People readily swallow what they are fed and don't often bother to determine or even care if it is fact or opinion. As long as it agrees with their particular view it is more often than not just assumed AS fact.

Which often times is why I post. The Gazette obviously will not balance their editorials, so........ the bloggers do it. Not the idea setup, but better than sitting still while Pat prints "opinions", for example, on Palin's stupidity by repeating the story she didn't know Africa was a continent. Even MSNBC themselves retracted the story when it was admitted to be a hoax. Pat sure didn't. I guess it was left up to the bloggers. Just an example.......

Where do you FIND this "straight forward news"???? Let me know!!!!! LOL :)

Denice, thank you for stepping forward. It shouldn't have to be signed "silent" Dem...... just...... a concerned American, regardless of party affiliation :)

I just remember how vocal & derogatory everyone was before. Now that people are at least "concerned"....... well, it's something. I also smile inwardly when I remember back to how Bush's deficit was going to ruin the country. Now that Obama's is going to dwarf it......people are..... "concerned".......

Sorry, I'm starting to snipe and should apologize. Thanks again for voicing.

Open Eyes

You need to work on your comprehension skills (and spelling, too). My concern is about the extending the power of the Patriot Act, specifically wiretapping. And yes, it is concern at this point as he's only been in office a short time. If stuff like this is going on for 4 or 8 years, now that's another story...

By the way, you needed have apologized for sniping. That is what is regularly expected from you.

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

Well, if you complain loudly and berate the police chief for allowing the neighbor next door to spy on you in a manner you consider "illegal" or don't like for 4 or 8 years, fine, you have that right. But when the new police chief has the power to stop it with a mere stroke of his pen, (as he has done on plenty of other things) but instead not only stops it, but defends it to a further extent than the previous police chief did, and your criticism suddenly becomes much more "muted"......... then I think either someone was wrong to complain so loudly for so long, or something doesn't smell right here.

Sniping apology retracted. I don't expect anything from anyone here, but what I expect from myself, is to try to view things in an honest perspective, instead of stopping first and basing the displeasure or the degree of my dissatisfaction on what the police chief's political party affiliation is. Some things can't be changed overnight. Some things can. Doing "nothing" would have been leaving the Bush wiretapping defense as it was, instead of......... expanding it..........

Me thinks Obama had a change of heart once he started getting his daily intelligence briefings.

But I DO apologize for misspelling your name. It was not intentional. I actually know people that spell it with a 'c'. My mistake. You left out the underscore in my name, but I won't berate you for it. I guess I deserve it in retaliation.... :)

open_eyes (anonymous) says...

PS - I'm not specifically attacking Denise_Dorcey (I cut and pasted it so I would make sure not to do something disrespectful like leave out an underscore) I'm retracting my sniping apology because it is "regularly expected of me".

And I hate to disappoint.

Feel free to snipe at me all you want. Just make sure you spell-check first. (I rarely bother to).......

I checked back into this column to express my pleasure at the editorial cartoon in last night's paper showing Somalia as the prefered destination for those of a tea party bent. Please note that no politcal party or persuasion was implied nor intended. But it appears as if this thread at the moment has gone right down the crapper. But YY4U, your last postings on the homeless in America column last evening had almost covinced me you could at times be serious and worthwhile....thanks for clearing up any confusion I might have felt by reverting back to your normally caustic, sarcastic, and rude self. I'm reminded of an ancient Chinese curse...."may life bring you all that you deserve". Oh...and as long as the meaning is clear....I don't care much how you, or I for that matter, spell.

Would you say that sundancekid's statement about red states being selfish was stereo-typing and wrong. Would you like to address that since you like to get on here and point out how wrong everyone is?

and he who stands on principal....will be made to stay after school. Yes, I do believe some of what he said was stereotyping and wrong. I for one don't see myself as gourging at the public trough and waiting for the blue states to serve up the next round....neither do I see any of my friends doing that. But, he was no more guilty of that than you, or open-eyes, or oh4the luv of, or I for that matter, have been at times. As for what YY4U says....well never mind....WAIT....I mean't that as a joke. And while I often think things toungue-in- cheek when I write them they don't come out that way. Please bear with me. I am a near 70-year-old man who is new at computers...and even newer at blogging. And while I'm at it....what does lol mean.
