Crack, you said

"When I'm exposed to SHS (cause) my eyes become irritated, my lungs burn, I begin to cough, my throat hurts."

Let me guess, you forgot to mention uncontrollable sneezing too, right? I feel your pain, because every time I am around dogs or cats, the same thing happens to me. Maybe we should eliminate second-hand pet dander, while we're at it...

Or maybe I can just either A) take a Benadryl and deal with it; B) Limit my exposure to pet dander.

What you are doing with the smoking ban, would be the same as me trying to tell Pet-Smart, or any other pet store, that they shouldn't allow pets in, because pet dander isn't healthy.

OK cracky. Let's try this. One simple question. Why aren't you lobbying to stop the SELLING of all nicotine products?
You realize, of course, that ALL grants for coalitions and for advertising would cease immediately if SELLING nicotine was illegal?

you said in another forum
"Now the name “Noose” has negative connotations and I don’t really feel comfortable supporting that."
You believe that businesses that allow smoking are killing you or at least harming you but you continue to support them but you won't support a nonsmoking bar because "the name “Noose” has negative connotations"? Can you see the flaws in your logic here?

The following is a small amount of info I came across while on the internet,

This study is exposing interesting discrepancies on deaths "caused" by Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS).

The alarmistic results about mortality "caused" by ETS are estimated from methods based on the average lung cancer risk observed in epidemiological studies of exposure to ETS.

These risks and exposures estimate 12 lung cancer deaths among never smokers for exposure to particulate ETS: 8 among the 11,960,000 male never smokers and 4 among the 28,850,000 female never smokers in the U.S."

The following is the web site address, if you wish to visit it.
http://www.forces.org/evidence/sterli...

I don't know how accurate or reliable this information is , but this is just another set of supposedly valid facts and estimates on the SHS/ETS issue.

I've given up on the smoking ban argument. But for those who are now worried about eating grilled meat, they say if you first marinate it in an acidic marinade (one with vinegar or lemon juice) it is just fine. Somehow the marinade counters the bad effects of flame broiling. And I don't know how much broiled meat you would have to eat to have a negative effect. Consuming large amounts of red meat is bad for you regardless of how you cook it. We can't worry about everything or we won't get anything done.

Reminds me of an old recipe for carp (a not-that-tasty-fish).

1) Take a flat board large enough to lay the cleaned carp on.

2) Marinate the carp overnight in a lemon-herb marinade.

3) Place the carp on the board and sprinkle liberally with salt/seasonings of your choice (or conservatively, for those of you who think I'm being unfairly biased)

4) Place the board with the carp in the oven and back at 350 degrees for 1/2 hour or until fish is done.

5) Take carp & board out of the oven when done.

6) Throw away the carp and eat the board.

shs only harms those that choose to go around it. If you don't want to be harmed by it then don't go around it. The nonsmoking options far outweigh the smoking ones so it is very easy and convenient to avoid shs. It hasn't always been so easy for the nonsmoker to avoid shs but it is very easy now. If you read my words carefully you will see that I'm only making a reasonable suggestion, not forcing anyone to do anything. I am also not advocating for shs. There truly is no need for further government intervention in this case.

Please vote NO. Thank you.

I'm not making excuses for shs, I'm giving you an easy way to avoid it while still allowing others a place to go hangout and smoke. Again I am not at all suggesting that you stay home. I have pointed out many times the fact that the vast majority of places are already smoke free. How is it that you still think that only government buildings are nonsmoking? Seriously, the vast majority of places are nonsmoking. If a problem exists it has been GREATLY exaggerated and is absolutely not in need of more government intervention. If you care about your health I encourage you to care about YOUR health. It is absurd for someone to be so incredibly deathly afraid of something to continue to go around it because they are stubborn and "not going to let 'those people' push them around." No matter how you look at it it doesn't make sense. If you don't want to be around shs then don't be around shs. Stop wasting the governments time and our tax dollars on something you can do yourself.

Please vote NO please. Thank you.

RWJF is the political wing of the Johnson & Johnson Company.
Why would J & J fund smoking ban lobbyists to get cigarettes banned?

Johnson & Johnson manufactures or owns Nicoderm, Nicoderm CQ, Nicotrol, Nicorette, and Commit alternative nicotine delivery products. As such, their sole purpose in funding the non-profits to lobby in favor of smoking bans is purely profit motivated. Eliminating the public use of tobacco by way of coerced government legislation (smoking bans), is primarily meant to increase demand for the products J & J sells.

http://cleanairquality.blogspot.com/

So the next time your local politicians start talking about enacting public policy for the "good of the people", ask yourself do they really mean the "good of the corporation?" or the politician who just stuffed his or her pockets?

VOTE NO!

part one
My dear, dear friend D. J. DiAblo has acquiesced, allowing me use his moniker to clear the air about some palpably asinine implications dispensed on this and several other blogs.
Some of you intrepid busy-bodies have an intense need of an education, so let’s get to it, shall we?
Let us learn about the origins of one of Emporia’s brighter night spots, "The Noose™,” and how the naming of it came about. I will do this in an earnest attempt to stem some of the short-sighted, thumb-sucking, hog-blathering “logic” floating around among various paranoid morons living in the community.
The bar at 323 Commercial is said to be the oldest continuously operating nightclub in Emporia, and it has been called “The Lariat Lounge” probably since the early 1960’s.
The logo, as depicted in neon on the front of the building for decades, was a silhouette of a desert scene with a mounted cowboy throwing a lasso around the words “The Lariat Lounge.”
Over the years many, many people affectionately referred to the place simply as “the Rope.” (It is common knowledge that folks like to give their friends, pets, and favorite hangouts {pun fully intended} nicknames.)
In March 2007 the club abruptly closed. The owners were weary after 30 or so years in the place, the liquor license was up for renewal the following April and it seemed to them an appropriate time to move on.
I didn’t want to see the place close down, I didn’t want to see another “blind eye” downtown, and so I negotiated with he former owners, friends of mine, and a deal was struck. Three of us formed a company called The Lariat™ LLC when we bought the club.
We wondered at the time if it would be best to keep the old name, as a matter of tradition, or to change it. We considered changing the name to “The Rope” because, as explained above, that’s how many Emporian’s already referred to it.
The building was in pretty bad shape, a lot worse than we’d anticipated, we hadn’t borrowed much capital and we all had the feeling that perhaps we’d bitten off a bit more than we could collectively chew. While meeting at another local watering hole to discuss this, a trade’s person walked by our table and said, “Hey, I hear you guys got yourselves into the Rope…”
Being an inveterate smart-aleck and lover of odd words and puns, I blurted out, “The way this is going it might be that we’ve put ourselves into a noose!”
Everyone present burst out in laughter and, in private conversation, the moniker stuck.

djdiablo (anonymous) says...

part two:
In my original logo drawings I depicted a rope and a running rabbit and we considered the very English name, "The Noose and Hare” or “"The Noose and Snare…”
Both had the potential for great trademarks and a classic rural appeal, plus I have a soft-spot of English pubs, having studied a very great many of them up-close and personally.
Knowing full well that whichever name we used that people would instinctively shorten it to "The Noose™,” we just went with that, not the pub image I wanted to project, but still an representation that was at least in compliance with the original name of the place and again, posessing a certain rustic panache.
(Incidentally, we found a great many rope/noose/lariat related gee-gaws stored away in the old club, including a stiff old hangman’s noose knotted by a man named Curry, one of the regulars back in the day, and the thing is hanging on the wall as I write…beside a perching, china raven and a framed portrait of Edgar Allen Poe…I hope that doesn’t offend any of you literary types. Or bird lovers. Just so you know, to my knowledge none of the owners or staff of our establishment has EVER hanged a raven, or a crow, for that matter…and none of us knew Edgar.)
Did we foresee that the tag, “Noose,” might be distasteful to certain types? Yes! Certainly we were cognizant from the onset that this appellation might possibly be misconstrued as offensive to the ancestors of English pirates, hundreds if not thousand of whom were dispatched by the knotted noose depicted in our logo.
Observably the decedents of a few horse thieves doubtless cringe at the image as well, but that’s about as far as it goes. (For those of you historically impaired or suffering from terminal political correctness, Kansas and a great many other states {and countries} have used the hangman’s noose as a way to dispatch evil-doers and footpads for many, many, many centuries and I reckon that some might consider it a penultimate sign of justice, kind of like that blindfolded cutie holding the scales.
So let the word go forth from this day onward, anyone drawing any other “inference” is, by my reckoning, pretty much an idiot trying to make one thing that is into something that it is not, looking for attention or trouble or both.
Consider yourself educated. There is no longer an excuse for continued stupidity.
p.s.
A purely personal note for those of you who were incapable of understanding my elucidation: consider yourselves cordially invited to stay out of our nightclub in perpetuity. I imagine you are already quite comfortable there underneath your damp little rock, you insipid toad(s).

Your pal:

S. C. Dixon

Researchers Identify Genetic Predictor of Lung Cancer Risk

Article date: 2008/04/03

What Is patientINFORM?

Smoking is by far the number one risk factor for lung cancer, but why do some pack-a-day smokers get the disease while others don't? The answer may depend in part on whether they inherited a specific genetic variation, according to a new study published this week in Nature Genetics.

Researchers from MD Anderson Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Cambridge, and the UK-based Institute for Cancer Research have pinpointed 2 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs, pronounced "snips") on chromosome 15 associated with an increased likelihood of developing lung cancer.
Certain inherited DNA changes can increase the risk for developing some cancers and are responsible for the cancers that run in some families. For example, the BRCA genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) are tumor suppressor genes -- they keep tumors from growing. Changes (mutations) in these genes can be passed on (inherited) from parents. When they are mutated, they no longer suppress abnormal growth, and cancer is more likely to develop.

But in most cases, the exact cause of cancer remains a mystery. We know that certain changes in our cells can cause cancer to start, but we don't yet know exactly how this happens. Many scientists are studying this problem.

Last Medical Review: 02/24/2009
Last Revised: 02/24/2009

Apparently there is absolutely no way of knowing whether you are going to get any form of cancer, regardless of the risk factor, according to the above information from the American Cancer Society !

crack & other smoking ban supporters;
Here is a hypothectical question for you.
IF you get your way and this smoking ban is passed and sometime after the ban is passed, lets assume that you or any of the other smoking ban supporters or anyone gets cancer, any form of cancer or other disease, what or who are you going to blame the cause on ? Will you blame it on your, self chosen exposure to SHS ? Will you blame it on the smokers who are standing outside to smoke ?
And do you not want to " FORCE " people to live by your rules and dictates ?

"Tea only (potentially) harms the person drinking it."

They claim that only heated tea causes cancer, thus the steam vapors from the pot or cup of tea being consumed by the person sitting next to you at a restaurant or coffee bar could be adversely affecting your health using your logic. What about the poor waiters and waitresses that are forced to work in such dangerous digs serving such poison? What about the folks that want to be able to drink their cocoa in peace and not be exposed to the lethal vapors being omitted off the cup of tea? Hopefully they won't be selling microwave popcorn much longer and plan on banning it's use in public buildings, the vapors emitting from those hot bags of corn are said to be full of deadly cancer causing carcinogens as well.

If you want me to stoop to your level, I can try. Two can play at this game. Here goes:

Steve, you are every bit as ignorant as you are revolting and your hatred towards your fellow citizens disgusts me. You are willing to use money that could have gone to your grandkids to fight a ban that would clearly benefit them. Apparently, you want to preserve their chances of being exposed to SHS against their will in hopes that you'll be able to profit off of it. Your unashamed selfishness and insatiable greed is matched only by your offensively putrid body odor. You make asinine assumptions and wild accusations based on no logic whatsoever.
Come April 7th, you will realize that you have wasted your time and money while severing many ties within the community. Do you really think the things you post on here give you a good reputation? When your business goes under, you won’t be able to blame the smoking ban because you have done more damage to your own name and livelihood than the smoking ban could ever do. Nobody wants to patronize an intolerant fool; you have brought it upon yourself.

Vote YES and put an end to the ignorance, intolerance, greed, and hate.

If you are truly honest, as you say, then on April 7th, you will vote "NO" and have come to your senses for this is "All" about control and revenue plus wanting to make Emporia a "carbon copy" of other towns. What you do fail to realize is that the people of Emporia CAN THINK for themselves and DO realize what is really is being attempted, loss of FREEDOMS!!! out the various forms concerning him after his death one of the questions was: Did this individual ever smoke? So Crack, when you die, if you EVER smoked, guess what? A statistic!
Please ask yourself where they come up with ALL the "stats"
Use your head!!! Also remember, to treat your fellowman in a
