here is a good compromise on the CAE proposed ban:
1.All business open to the public must designate by a sign on their main entrance door whether they allow smoking or not.
2.If a business allows smoking they must have all employees and prospective employees sign a form,
( Approved by the city) that they are aware of the smoking status of the business, and keep said form on file on the premises.
3. Anyone violating the signage on the front door of the business will be fined $250.00 for each occurance.
4, The Emporia police dept. will have the duty to enforce this ordinance.
This should TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS, so to speak.

dhcc66: I suspect you are right. My internal filters (lungs) are probably pretty clogged and dirty after 45 years of smoking. Luckily, though, my vents are relatively clean and clear of obstructions and the old furnace still heats on command! :)

No, neighbor, I quit smoking long before my daughter was even a blip on the radar. My own allergies probably were at least triggered by my own smoking years ago, as allergies tend to develop due to repeated exposure. I was about 28 when I first started having allergy symptoms.
Again, congrats on the good genetics, and thanks for not smoking around my not-so-great genetics.

I once had the opportunity to transport a piece of lung tissue from surgery to pathology. Because the pathologist knew me (and knew I smoked at the time) he made me stay for his slice and dice show. I know exactly what your "filters" look like, BJ and it ain't pretty. Of course being 18 or so at the time I think I rolled my eyes in disdain but it did make an impression on me that influenced my decisions later. After seeing that, there certainly was no question in my mind what was making me hack and cough all the time. I sure don't miss that!
As to the question of other severe allergies like peanuts and bee stings, those are far less common than people who have adverse reactions to smoke whether it be respiratory, allergic, or cardiovascular. Lots of legal products are regulated, the more potential for danger, the more they are regulated (prescription drugs, alcohol, refrigerants come to mind) Regulation does not equal ban.

We had a girl in the bar once who left because she felt claustrophobic. She said she always felt claustrophobic around large groups of people. She didn't like the atmosphere, so she left. I was somewhat sad to see her leave (GORGEOUS!), but it was her choice, and I completely understand that. I have had other guests leave because they felt it was too hot (usually on the dance floor) or too cold, too loud, too quiet, too crowded, too empty, too many guys, too many girls, too many blacks, too many whites, too many Mexicans, too many Somalians (1), too many minors, too much hip-hop, too much country, too much rock, too much metal, too much bluegrass, too much jazz, too many liberals, too many conservatives, too many "weird" people, not enough weird people, and yes, because the bar was too smokey.
I have honestly had people leave for every one of those reasons mentioned above. It is a simple case of me trying to be accommodating to everyone who comes in, but it boils down to the fact that you can't please everyone all the time. Do more people leave because of second-hand smoke than the other reasons, no. Nor have I had anymore than maybe 1 or 2 people suggest I go non-smoking, and that is over the course of more than 2 years.
If you don't like it, don't come in. I don't care if its second hand smoke, the music, the crowd, the owner, or whatever. If you don't like it, don't come in! I think everyone is smart enough to know that second hand smoke isn't good for you. Ok. Great, don't come in if it bothers you. If you do come in, and it bothers you, leave. Its as simple as that.

Matt - You forgot too much drama! lol At least there was last time I came in a couple of weeks ago. The thing is, you're right, stay or go, it's still my choice! And I left because it was way past my bedtime!

those are all great reasons to leave a bar. you are right i have also left for all those reasons. but not one of those reasons affected my health. and on regulations not ban idea i am for it if all the businesses in town, who would allow smoking, agree to place either an up-to-date filtration system or an adequate ventilation system.... i am all for a regulation for smoking and not a ban, so when you find me a cigarette or cigar that filters the smoke i breath when you exhale, let me know. .

holierthanthou, OOPS! I mean smarterthanyou,
you said, "when you find me a cigarette or cigar that filters the smoke i breath when you exhale, let me know."
Ok, its not a cigarette or cigar, but they have been around for years. They are called, get this, DOORS!
If you don't care to breathe second hand smoke, and you are standing in front of one of these devices, and if you open it will expose you to second hand smoke, DON'T FRIGGIN OPEN IT!

We've got the right to choose it
There ain't no way we'll lose it
This is our life, this is our song
We'll fight the powers that be just
Don't pick our destiny 'cause
You don't know us, you don't belong
Oh you're so condescending
Your gall is neverending
We don't want nothin', not a thing from you
Your life is trite and jaded
Boring and confiscated
If that's your best, your best won't do

are you kidding. . you cant smoke outdoors, where there is adequate ventilation?. . . many other towns have gone to the no smoking in public buildings, and people still smoke, just not indoors.

smarterthanyou--
You should change it to lazierthanyou. If you want to know what is going on in these threads, you should read them.
That way you can re-enter the conversation with an informed opinion and not poorly written drivel.
Not to mention that this ban covers private property, you can't smoke in public buildings under existing laws in Emporia (i.e. schools, courthouses, city/county offices.)

thank you B.E. for that. . . but come on this is a health issue, it is to better all. not a rights issue they dont allow you to drink in your own private vechicle while driving, since it is a health and risk issue. man lets bad mouth the city, state, and fed gov't a little bit more for trying to make us healthier. . . how dare they. .

The county board of health forwarded Monday a model ordinance banning smoking in parks to the county's Council of Governments, composed of local mayors and the three county commissioners. Electing to try to change the rules in public parks owned by cities as well as the county, the board members decided to seek input from mayors before introducing any sweeping new regulations. There was some discussion of making a decision without cities' input, but some board members argued it would make any new rules unpopular and difficult to enforce, especially if the county depended on municipal authorities.
