Online Chat with Emporia Zoo Director Lisa Keith
Moderator: Today our guest is Lisa Keith, Director of Emporia's David Traylor Zoo. Lisa is here to answer your questions about the Zoo, upcoming changes and recent recognitions by the AZA. We have 30 minutes for our chat so we will get started with our first question.
moderator: You were just awarded AZA accreditation agian. What does that mean?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: It is very exciting to be awarded accreditation by the Association of Zoo's and Aquariums. The Zoo started the process by turning in a very in depth application/questionnaire for accreditation in March 2011. In July, we went thru the inspection process. The inspectors, whom are professionals in the Zoo field inspect the premises to make sure we meet AZA's standards for animal management and care, including living environments, social groupings, health, and nutrition. They also make sure that animals are provided with enrichment, which stimulates each animal's natural behavior and provides variety in their daily routine. The Accreditation Commission also evaluates the veterinary program, involvement in conservation and research, education programs, safety policies and procedures, security, physical facilities, guest services, and the quality of the institution's staff. And because a zoo or aquarium needs a strong foundation in order to continue to meet high standards, accreditation also evaluates each institution's finances, its governing authority, and its support organization.
moderator: What is the benefit of being an AZA accredited zoo?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: The benefits of being accredited come on many levels. It develops public confidence because the institution meets or exceeds current professional standards by providing a publicly recognized badge signifying excellence in, and commitment to, such things as animal care, conservation and education. It increases our eligibility for grants and allows us access to critical AZA programs and services such as participation in animal exchange (access to specimens from other AZA accredited zoos for loan or breeding) and the Species Survival Plan, AZA’s flagship Animal Conservation Program. We are also able to take advantage of the collaboration opportunities with colleagues who are top experts in their field which is a wonderful benefit for a Zoo our size. Select AZA accredited institutions offer free and discounted admission to other accredited zoos and aquariums.
moderator: Where are things at with the new North American Forrest exhibit?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: The Preston Forest Adventure is currently under construction and is moving along nicely. We are planning a Grand Opening for November 6 at 1 pm. We would like to invite the public to come down and be among the first to enjoy the new area which will include an interactive children’s play area as well as an educational sound graphic. The expansion would not have been possible without the generosity of the Bill & Aloha Preston Family Trust as well as contributions from the City of Emporia, Emporia Community Foundation, Emporia Construction & Remodeling Inc., Emporia Friends of the Zoo and the Loretto A. Langley Charitable Trust.
moderator: How is the fundraising for the new Lemur exhibit going? How can people help make that a reality?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: The Rotary Club of Emporia has pledged $25,000 towards the project and has successfully held Lemurfest, an annual fundraiser for three years. We are currently exploring avenues to gather additional funds for this project through grants as well as visiting with local entities and donors. If you would like to contribute to "Mission Madagascar", the new Lemur exhibit, please contact the Zoo office(75 Soden Road) at 620-341-4365 or send an email to emporiazoo@emporia-kansas.gov
jamesbordonaro: don't think it's humane to keep the Cougar in such a small space. She always seems to be pacing in her cage. Is there a way to temporarily transfer or switch animals with other zoos nearby so that the animals can experience a variety of environments? Also, there's a rumor that there have been multiple sightings of cougars in Kansas but that until one is killed the Dept. of Wildlife won't acknowledge that cougars are in KS so they won't have to be listed as endangered. Any truth to that?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: The mountain lion is a solitary animal in the wild. The exhibit was designed specifically for him with running water and rocks and perching areas. These areas within the exhibit give him the chance to experience the same things as they would in the wild. "Sampson" the resident mountain lion at the Zoo came to us as a cub and is very content in his surroundings. Large cats sometimes pace but generally for the reason of exercise. He is given enrichment on a regular basis to also bring out the instincts of a wild cat. Sightings of mountain lions in Kansas has increased and recently the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks acknowledged that mountain lions whether wild or captive raised have been confirmed in the state. I cannot answer your question regarding the endangered listing but would suggest that you contact the KDWP.
moderator: What are some of the other long term goals for the David Traylor Zoo?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: The Zoo's mission is to provide an environment which inspires respect and stewardship for the natural world, improves the future for wildlife and provides a recreational opportunity for learning about nature and conservation. The Zoo partners with many organizations city wide as well as many surrounding counties. With those great partners, along with EFOZ, the dedicated staff and the support of the public, the Zoo will continue to thrive for many years to come. To promote that mission, some of the future goals for the Zoo include the construction of a new Lemur exhibit which will allow year round viewing with larger indoor housing to promote the opportunity for breeding as well as an opportunity to educate visitors on the importance of the species. An updated Master Plan is to be completed in the next five years. We are also working on designs for a new Zoo entrance which would be a great addition allowing visitors to identify the main entrance into the Zoo.
moderator: What would it take to get another Monkey Island in Emporia?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: I remember visiting monkey island at Peter Pan Park years ago and it was truly a gem back then. Today, the regulations have changed so much that having such an exhibit in the City of Emporia would not be feasible. Primates have special needs and are very territorial in some instances and would need constant monitoring. For now, a monkey island is not in the future plans for the Zoo.
moderator: What is EFOZ and how can people join?
Lisa Keith, Zoo Director: EFOZ stands for Emporia Friends of the Zoo. The Emporia Friends of the Zoo stated purpose has been to provide financial support for the expansion, development and maintenance of the Zoo. EFOZ is a non- profit society that receives funds through memberships, donations, grants and memorials. Memberships to EFOZ are available year round. To receive more information regarding memberships, donations or memorials, please contact the Zoo Office at 620-341-4365 or email us at emporiazoo@emporia- kansas.gov .
moderator: Any last thoughts to share with readers?
