Voters in Lyon County had a chance to head to the polls on a Saturday for the first time this weekend.
The county’s new voting machines were set up at the Flinthills Mall. Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat said more than 240 people had cast a ballot by noon Saturday.
“They have spoken loud and clear — they love the Saturday voting,” she said.
“I’m very, very pleased.”
The county chose to offer the Saturday option because it had never been able to do so in the past. The new voting machines in the county, however, made it possible.
She’d like to offer Saturday voting next year, as well.
Voter Charity Sandstrom cast her ballot Saturday. She said she normally votes in advance because her schedule can change at a moment’s notice. Saturday fit her schedule well.
“I think Saturday voting may open the door for more people to vote because of weekday work schedules,” she said.
Sandstrom said having a single day to vote is inconvenient and she hopes to see Saturday polling places back in future elections.
Vopat said the county was “always looking for that extra option for voters to cast their ballot,” but ideally no one would be prevented from voting during the week for any reason.
“I would hope that that wouldn’t be the main reason, because I’m hoping that when we have the polling place voting that it’s easy and accessible also for voters,” she said.
