Special to The Gazette

A community event will begin with homemade chili and an open ranch, followed by the music of Weda Skirts, a popular group that hails from the Flint Hills.

At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Weda Skirts perform in concert at Pioneer Bluffs, a historic Flint Hills ranch near Matfield Green.

Attendees are encouraged to come early. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., dinner with a variety of homemade chili, cornbread, and cinnamon rolls will be available. Skirts’ albums can be purchased, and members of the group will be on hand to visit and sign autographs. Pioneer Bluffs can be explored with a self- guided tour, interpretive exhibits and kiosks showing Flint Hills ranching.

Weda Skirts perform “acoustic music that speaks from, and to, the heart,” said band member Elexa Dawson. At the core of Weda Skirts’ extensive repertoire is original music written by Dawson. Members of Weda Skirts are Dawson, Melissa Tastove, Sarah Bays, Brandi Emley, Emily Wilson and Rachel Allai.

For the evening, a $15 suggested donation includes dinner and music. All proceeds support preservation of Flint Hills ranching heritage at Pioneer Bluffs.

Reservations for dinner requested, but not required. For reservations or information, contact Executive Director Lynn Smith at lynn@pioneerbluffs.org or (620) 753-3484, or visit the Facebook event page.

Pioneer Bluffs is a nonprofit organization with a mission to preserve the ranching heritage of the Flint Hills. A National Register Historic District, Pioneer Bluffs is on Flint Hills National Scenic Byway K-177, 14 miles south of Cottonwood Falls or 1 mile north of Matfield Green.
